Tennessee will never be nationally relevant again. High school recruits weren’t even alive or were just born the last time they were worth a shite for more than a year.

EVERY big program recruits the hell out of Texas though, and to speak as if it's an infinite resource for high end talent each year is also dumb. There are only so many elite prospects in Texas every year and they're being recruited hard by the in-state programs. There's the first and biggest hurdle. LSU is a next door neighbor as well. Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson are going to poach kids. My point here is that I think one bad hire could set them back a long long time. They've nailed the last two. The question in the OP was a bit rhetorical. I know how Oklahoma has avoided that fate, I wanted to dig more into why Tennessee and Nebraska are still suffering their fate and explore the plausibility that Oklahoma treads a fine line when it comes to staying elite.

I think this has pretty much been answered too. Bad coaching hires in both cases.

Neither team has had any marquee players either. Oklahoma has had several kids who weren't high profile recruits that turned into household names.

A lot of this comes down to luck.

Nebraska fired Solich after a 10 win season. Pelini was averaging 9 a year too (although I think he'd hit his ceiling).

None of those out of state programs have the in roads to Texas like OU does. I really don’t think you understand how big OU is in Texas

OU is really big in DFW. They are clearly behind A&M and UT elsewhere though

He is clueless.

Will tOSU, Clemson, Bama, LSU, etc. pick off tops kids every now and then? Absolutely. Will they do it with the consistency that OU does? No.

Good stability with stoops then smooth transition with great young coach.

And look where that has gotten them. They have significantly better players that Nebraska and Tennessee, but insignificantly (if at all) better results than either over the last 15-20 years. Especially A&M.

Goes to show you how important coaching hires actually are.

There might be more LSU alums in Houston than there are in New Orleans. Half my family lives in Texas chief. Their 12 years of mediocrity between end of Switzer and early Stoops tells me that it isn't an "easy" job with a lot of built in advantages like you seem to be think it is because "muh texas". They hired an assistant coach out from under Steve Spurrier, THE innovator at the time, and it ended up being a homerun.

OU has limited success recruiting out of Houston. That is UT/A&M territory without question.

LSU has pretty large presence in Houston/SE Texas as well.

Miami has largely been dog crap for almost two decades now.

LSU waffled between pretty good and bad for nearly forty years before Saban and never sniffed the mountain top.

Texas had some good years and some lean years for a long time between the 1960's and the Mack Brown era.

USC had about three decades with a lot of lean years between Robinson's only title and Carroll.

Georgia and Michigan have a combined two national titles since the Berlin Air Drop.

So on and so on.

Getting to the mountaintop and staying in the vicinity is very hard in college football. It is the most coach-centric sport out there by a long shot, and they are a rare and precious commodity.

And he hired the revolutionary to coach his first offense. Which is still paying dividends for them (in the form of their current HC).

There is some chicken-and-egg to this. Oklahoma essentially has in-state type recruiting access to DFW which helped Stoops get it to where it is today. But without stoops, they would just be another out of state school dipping in there. He kicked the doors open and set up camp there.

Like has been said in this thread (maybe by you, I don't remember) if Oklahoma screws up the hire of Stoops, Oklahoma doesn't rebound as quickly or at all. Instead, you'd probably see people talk about Mack Brown the way they talk about Saban right now.

DFW has been experiencing population growth for over 20 years now. This is nothing new.

That was my point for the rise of OU the last 20 years
