re: How has Oklahoma avoided the fate of Nebraska and Tennessee?

In-state recruiting is the backbone to the success of most college football teams. That is undeniable. Can UT be nationally relevant with a roster made up of 43 kids from Tennessee?
Does the same apply for Clemson and Oklahoma? Clemson loses in-state battles to USC even when the Gamecocks are not playing great ball. They also recruit regionally and get some of the best players and in the past 2-3 years they have become more of a national recruiting brand.
Tennessee's problem is that they don't have the coaching staff to convince top tier recruits to come there over Georgia, Alabama and Clemson. They used to raid North Carolina for the top players in the state and now those kids are going to Georgia, Alabama or Clemson if they are good enough to get offered. Tennessee doesn't stand a chance while all three competing programs are running circles around them on the recruiting trail. Pruitt did win a couple recruiting battles last year, but I think that momentum is now toast.
It becomes a chicken and the egg problem - you typically need success to get the best recruits to pull the trigger for your school, and its hard to get success without the top recruits. If the new coach already is a known quantity (Meyer, Saban, Spurrier) its easier to recruit well out of the gate.

They are closer to Texas

Tennessee ain't recruiting Memphis to a significant degree.
Memphis is closer to Tulsa than it is Knoxville.

Cedric Wilson was from Memphis melrose high school. Great WR back in the day.

OU was a fricking disaster in the 90's...worse than the worst Nebraska has been in recent memory.
Aggie thrived.
I think there is a connection. Texas kids are always going to go to UT if they are talented enough.
The battle is between OU and Aggie for the other stars.
OU and not UT is what drives Aggie down. Because OU is better historically by a wide margin. Aggie seems to only be good when OU sucks. UT can suck but then Aggie also sucks. UT is just gonna get their share regardless how crappy the program is.
You see this connection with So Cal and border Arizona schools. Tons of SoCal hot female talent goes to ASU and Arizona because they're easier schools to get into and they're close to their home in Los Angeles.
Same goes with football SoCal talent. When USC totally sucked in the 90's suddenly you had Desert Swarm and ASU a last minute away from a Rose Bowl victory and a National Title with Jake the Snake.
USC starts dominating again in the 2000s and the Zona schools go to dogshite. Certain border states adversely affect the life of a football program.
Georgia frankly has no excuse...they have multiple states to choose from and when Alabama and LSU sucked in the mid to late 90's - Florida stole everything. With Alabama and LSU sucking for over a decade...Georgia should've had a Natty...but they seem to never be able to take advantage of a down league but once.

Based on your criteria ole miss should be a powerhouse. Kind of a racist thread.
Ain't many black, elite football recruits clamoring to go to Ole Miss unless they're getting paid.
And why the hell should they want to go there?

Yes this thread is racist against white people bc everyone knows white guys make the best skill players.

It seriously is hard to believe that Nebraska hasn't been relevant in almost two full decades. When I was a kid growing up learning about the sport, it was always Florida State and Nebraska that you heard about. Those were the two best programs in all of college football in the mid-90s.
Yeah same here. I’m surprised Nebraska isn’t able to poach a lot of good talent from Texas. I guess all the top Texas talent wants to stay in Texas, Ok, or go to the SEC.

OU plays one tough game per year at a neutral site no less. Not prepared in post season but get there every year.

all 5* players would have to cross through Oklahoma to get there. throw in UT, A&M, and LSU. then account for the boys who want to stay home at TCU, Baylor, and Tech. then sift the 4 stars through the same sieve. rinse, repeat. aside from Ohio State, the midwest is a dinosaur

Despite OU trumpeting the number of national merit scholars, prospective students from Texas do not have to pass a standardized test to be admitted into OU or OSU. There are minimum requirements to gain entrance into major Texas schools.

I don't believe close proximity to home matters now as much as it did 20 years ago. Technology has made it so we can be in constant communication with our friends and loved ones. You have social media, texting, and Skype/FaceTime. No matter where you are, home is just a phone call on your cell phone away.

I am not sure I accept your premise in the first place.
I don't think Tennessee's problem is recruiting footprint, even long-term. They've sucked arse for the last decade and have still recruited pretty well. Like OU, they are both proximate enough and relatively close within the conference footprint to the big recruiting pools.
That might be the case with Nebraska, but I am not sure I buy it is with Tennessee.
For Tennessee, at least, it's coaching and organization management (Haslem, school admin, Fulmer). Pure and simple.
Perfectly said.

proximity to the state of Texas and the coaches they have hired.

Bad Coaches, followed by a change in conference where guaranteed wins vs Bad schools become losses to Better schools.
Nebraska had the same thing happen in the B1G. Big thing is they’ve got a losing record against Wisky
Tennessee meanwhile can’t beat Bama, and they are in direct competition with them.

man, we’re 10 years into these things being a regular deal and kids still aren’t crossing the Red to go anywhere other than Oklahoma.
Nebraska was only good because they cheated more and better than anyone else cheated. they’re dead. there isn’t a coach in the country, Saban included, who could resurrect Nebraska. just move on

OU's worst hires as HC are far above TN's and Nebraska's best hires in this era.

Firing Frank Solich was the beginning of really bad mistakes. Then moving to the Big 10.
At Tennessee, Alabama hiring Saban was the start of the problems followed by the clusterfrick that was Lane Kiffin which began a domino effect. Prior to Saban going to Alabama, Fat Phil was widely seen as one of the best recruiters in the country, Think about it, he got big talent from as far away from California.....See the Clausens, Munoz, Jr and some other L.A. products. He was able to lure P. Manning from New Orleans.
