Take a look at these programs 15-20 years ago and they are remarkably similar. Traditional football powers in small states with a low african american population. Tennessee and Nebraska have fallen by the wayside, while Oklahoma has not only remained relevant, but elite.

I know the answer seems obvious- their roster is subsidized by the state of Texas at a >50% rate. That argument holds water for Nebraska, but Tennessee borders GA, NC, and AL- all talent rich states. There are parts of Florida, Virginia, and Ohio closer to Knoxville than there are parts of Texas closer to Norman.

Look into your crystal ball to 2039... is Oklahoma still succeeding despite what could be the proverbial writing on the wall; inevitable decline due to location, or have they succumbed to their fate and declined to the levels of the other fallen powers.

Another question I would pose, is their continued success solely dependent on the mediocrity of Texas A&M? Nebraska is an outlier here, but UT's last great run came at a time when they were getting Cali kids during SC's mediocrity and GA kids during Georgia's mediocrity.

What is more likely over the next 10-20 years; Tennessee and Nebraska get back to OU's current level, or OU falls to Tennessee and Nebraska's current level?

Since when is the success of Oklahoma dependent on A&M?

Since when has A&M been an elite program? Reread the question. Would an elite Texas A&M spell decline for Oklahoma. Texas is always going to get theirs in state.

You want to look at how OU football was going in the 90s when A&M was pretty good?

I think having Bob Stoops helped OU keep up, while Nebraska and Tennessee weren't able to keep the success without Osborne or Fulmer.

So would you deduct that one bad hire for OU going forward could put themselves in a hole too big to dig out of, or are they somehow above that? And why, compared to the other two that started down that hole years ago

Prior to Stoops being hired, they hadn't won more than 6 games in any of the previous five years.

Stoops put them back on track and largely kept them there. We'll see if Riley can continue that.

They had NCAA issues post Switzer, and made some awful hires

And to answer that question, no. There is more than enough talent for OU, A&M, and UT. All three were either top 5 or fringe top 5 classes last year, and all three will be top 10 this year

I would figure multiple bad hires had something to do with it.

I am not sure I accept your premise in the first place.

I don't think Tennessee's problem is recruiting footprint, even long-term. They've sucked arse for the last decade and have still recruited pretty well. Like OU, they are both proximate enough and relatively close within the conference footprint to the big recruiting pools.

That might be the case with Nebraska, but I am not sure I buy it is with Tennessee.

For Tennessee, at least, it's coaching and organization management (Haslem, school admin, Fulmer). Pure and simple.

this argument doesn't really fly because A&M is still recruiting better than OU. So it's not like there's less talent to spread around.

What about small states with a large African American population? Based on your criteria ole miss should be a powerhouse. Kind of a racist thread.

But to answer your question.. Oklahoma is close enough to fertile recruiting grounds to maintain success as long as they keep a good coach.
Tennessee is just a good coach from being relevant.
I see Nebraska staying middle of the road for a long time with the occasional 10-11 win season.

Plenty of talent in texas for all 3. Plus OU recruits nationally now. They come into Cali to get recruits
