Qualifying for the U.S. Open at several sites all day today. I'm fascinated by the idea that regular Joe Schmoes can and sometimes do qualify for a major championship to play against the best in the world. It's the main reason the U.S. Open is my favorite major.

it is a tough road. Local qualifier then to another 4 round qualifier with a cut after rd 2.

Huh? It was 18 a few weeks ago, then it's 36 today, no cut. Lots of WD's. You play well today, you're in next week

There has been a guy practicing the past few weeks at my course who is trying to qualify out of Memphis. He has a tough road ahead of him with almost half the field being low level tour pros!

I'd argue that qualifying for the U.S. Open as an amateur is one of the toughest things to do in sports. Nearly 10,000 players started out in local qualifying which gets pared down to about 800 players left today to qualify for about 100 or so spots.

I think the largest site has 13 entries into the field, I believe there are 30-40 total entries from qualifying sites

I was told in the GOAT ability thread that all US Open qualifiers were over for this year or I'd be out there.

I always get crap for saying the US Open is my favorite major.

I love the qualifying.
I love the stories.
I love the rotating courses.
I love the difficulty. A winning score of around par is awesome.

Plus the first tournament I watched all the way through was the 08 US Open. I wanted Tiger to win, but damn I wanted Rocco to win as well.

Exactly. It amazes me how some people act like you've got an arm growing out of your forehead when you say the U.S. Open is your favorite major. I absolutely love the Masters but I'd go 1a) U.S. Open 1b) Masters as tournaments I'd most want to win.

Ditto.

I love the Masters. And as a turf grass student, Augusta is the pinnacle of golf courses.

But something about the US Open. It's just awesome.

1.A Open
1.A.1 Masters
4. PGA
5.TPC

The PGA just isn't as good in almost anyway as the others. Last Major of the year, I guess.
