For life after football. Pretty interesting, had no idea he did this.

quote:

Shannon Sharpe: “Have you always been responsible with money?”

Ochocinco: “Always.”

“I stayed at the stadium the first two years.”

“I wasn’t gonna spend no money.”

“Everything I needed was right there.”

“Showers. Cafeteria. TV. Couch. Gaming system.”

“What’s the point of renting a house?”

“I was locked in.”

“It wasn’t about having my own space or dating.”

“I needed that first year to lock in.”

“By my third year, Marvin Lewis told me, ‘Now it’s time to spread your wings.’”

“So I got a little one-bedroom place right down the street.”

quote:

“I never bought real anything when I was playing.”

“I went to Claire’s.”

“What am I doing it for?”

“Why am I buying a $50,000 watch? An $80,000 watch?”

“What time is it?”

“How much did that cost me? Nothing. Time is free.”

Correct. One of many reasons we Bengals fans absolutely love this guy. I've got a framed Chad Johnson jersey in my man cave.

He said it before in an interview as well about his jewelry being fake - people know how much he's worth, why does he need to wear a 100k chain to show off?? He spent that money investing instead.

Young players who spend it recklessly could learn a lot from players like him

For anyone one that has been to a Claires, that's pretty funny.

The internet tells me that Claire’s filed multiple bankruptcies.

Would’ve only been like 42 percent for Ochocinco with today’s McDonalds prices compared to when he was in the league

I think it’s been widely known he lived stadium/training facility for the first 2-3 years he was in Cincy.

As "cheap" as I am...I may have done the exact same thing. Although, maybe not living at the facility. But I would be fine with a small rental or an apartment as close to the facility as I could get. Every meal would have been on the Bengals dime. Showers in the locker room to keep my utilities down. If I got the apartment, it would basically be a bed. I'm not doing shite but sleeping there. Hopefully it is close enough to walk or bike to.

I remember there was a fullback on the late 90s Atlanta Falcons who drove an old pickup truck. When all the other players busted his balls he said it was paid for and it worked. Too many players think the money will never end.

In all honesty, the guy was spending about a million bucks per year…..so he wasn’t exactly starving! He just wasn’t going out buying Bentleys and that kind of shite. That’s the way it ought to be done!

That's roughly $40MM that he says he "saved". Take a big chunk for taxes and his agent and say at the low end he nets $25MM.

Not bad, Chad. Hell of a career getting to retire in your late 30s

I hate to be the one to bring this up, but he has 8 kids by 7 different women (just the ones he claims). I'm sure that took a big chunk out of all of those investments..

I admire the guy and the folks who raised him.

That said, isn't it sad that he stands out for these very sensible actions?

He also saved money by getting Sean Payton to buy a bunch of tickets for his family/friends and never paid him back.

i’d say this stands out as a sign of good luck prepared by good preparation. he has the same proclivities as every professional athlete, he just managed to thread the needle of having 8 kids with 7 women. he’s literally a one of one

just a few more programs and our murder rate will mirror the Norwegians
