Warrick Dunn essentially did the same thing . He lived in a 2 bdrm condo near the stadium in Tampa and plowed all the excess money into paying for his brothers and sisters education and living expenses.

Also, he retired in 2011. The S&P has averaged 14% since then. That would put him over 100mil today using that 25mil number.
