will have to pay taxes on that along with paying taxes on their athletic scholarships
What?

On their income, sure. On their scholarships???

Don't think for one minute that the NCAA hasn't already thought of this because there's no way that they're going to just throw this out there without any thorough thinking.
Wait, you're arguing the NCAA, who has nothing to do with taxes and scholarships, will make athletes pay taxes on their scholarships?

No She3 my position is that the NCAA can easily file to put restraints and injunctions on these laws that will hold them up for years until it is negotiated.

Well, today's announcements tell me that players making money is a heck of a lot more likely than these injunctions you're claiming.

That's an odd team to fixate on. Teams like Texas and USC will benefit at the expense of those like Auburn, VT, Clemson, etc.

Oh and there goes minor league baseball.

You're naive if you believe this. The good players will still go straight out of high school to Minors in hopes of getting to big leagues in less than 3 years and begin that long 6 year service time process to make it to free agency.

I think all college sports should be go pro out of high school or stay 3 years in college before going pro.

Yeah I say start paying players and tell the NCAA to screw off. The NCAA is done IMO.

It’s past time when universities should get back to what they are there to do — educate.

Sports play a role in education, but not the way top tier college football and basketball are run today. Here’s hoping that all colleges will do to sports what the Ivy League does.

Absolutely not upset whatsoever! Good for them if this does indeed get put in place relative to the collegiate athletes getting paid. I'm simply stating that they will also have to pay taxes on all of that, including scholarships, because that is a form of payment (tuition being covered by the university). It matters not to me one bit.

Say Rutgers has/gets some deep pocketed donors/fans that would be more than happy to pay 5 star recruits to put their picture on some ads.

Could make for a very quick turnaround for mediocre teams that have fans like that.

The real winners here will be those athletes who want to teach tennis or swimming lessons, or a pitcher going to help at a summer camp. They currently can't be legally compensated for teaching others what they're good at.

Successful sports teams have been shown to increase contributions to the math and history departments, and increase enrollments university-wide.

If all of the FBS schools had endowments like the Ivies do, what you suggest could be possible.

No. Not the NCAA. I know they're not an extension of the dreaded irs. What I'm simply saying is that IF the collegiate athletes do indeed start getting paid then they will have to pay taxes on that (whatever payments, endorsements, etc. they get). The irs will be circling like sharks with blood in the water. Scholarships should be viewed as income as well (my opinion only) relative to athletic scholarships because the universities are footing the bill for all or part of the athletic scholarships.

In the end I believe that the NCAA has opened up a pandora's box and it will ruin college athletics forever. Again, my opinion only.

This. Or the kids like the University of Utah football player that wasn't allowed to take a sales internship and maintain eligibility because the NCAA decided they couldn't know if they were buying from him because he's a good salesman or because he's a football player.

I'm still not understanding this point at all. How is this going to be any different from the current state of affairs aside from bringing it from under the table to on the table?

Parity in CFB jumped out the window decades ago, and it's been big name schools with shite tons of money running shite.

I agree with this.

The tax thing is irrelevant. They pay taxes if they work at McDonald's.
