The irs will be circling like sharks with blood in the water. Scholarships should be viewed as income as well (my opinion only) relative to athletic scholarships because the universities are footing the bill for all or part of the athletic scholarships.

There's a couple of proposed bills in Congress dealing with this. Essentially all aid given to a student-athlete, up to the cost of attendance (a number that the fed government uses for financial aid, and is different for each school) would be considered a tax-free scholarship, and everything above that would be considered earned income... which means... either they are an employee (and dealing with FICA) or they are self-employed (and dealing with self-employment taxes).

I think all college sports should be go pro out of high school

there's really no reason the NBA or NFL should do this.

Worst case scenario for them, they get the super stars a year/3 years laters (NBA/NFL).

Best case, they weed out potential busts that hurt franchises.

Yes I know there are still busts, but at least NBA and NFL scouts have more time to review players.

That's an odd team to fixate on. Teams like Texas and USC will benefit at the expense of those like Auburn, VT, Clemson, etc.

Parity in CFB jumped out the window decades ago, and it's been big name schools with shite tons of money running shite.
There will be a shift for sure. You’ll see how much each fanbase really cares.

Didn't address my point on parity at all. Fanbase translates to boosters in this case anyway. It's going to come down to what it has already been coming down to, boosters with lots of money to throw around. Currently, they go through bagmen. Now they can circumvent that afaik.

Basically, a big ol net 0. Like I said, parity left a long time ago.

The tax thing is irrelevant.

It won't be irrelevant if they start having to pay taxes on their athletic scholarships. Don't think for one minute that the NCAA and member schools haven't already started thinking of that and in all fairness, they absolutely should.

Not trying to be argumentative. Just stating my opinion and we all know that the NCAA doesn't do anything just to do it. Especially if it doesn't benefit them.

Big markets already have professional sports. They don’t care about college athletics. This will benefit more rural states that have big money boosters and a monopoly on sports entertainment.

I know you're half joking but those hot chicks can be IG models now with a 300k followers and make money off it and still play their respective sports

No I'm being 100% honest. There's female college athletes that we've never heard of with huge social media followings. Male athletes don't come close in that area.

They could get super physically mature guys like Adrian Peterson out of high school with less mileage on them.

There are instathots that make millions of dollars being whores on social media.

Chicks like Paige Spiranac will be so rich while still in college. Average players in chick sports, but 500k followers on social media so Nike or Adidas sponsors them.

You're naive if you believe this. The good players will still go straight out of high school to Minors in hopes of getting to big leagues in less than 3 years and begin that long 6 year service time process to make it to free agency.

I was hoping that poster would explain.

Is he thinking kids coming out of high school that are good at baseball are going to get millions in endorsements, something close to what top draft picks get in signing bonuses?

Hopefully they will have unlockable teams. If so, 2003 LSU will be going in dry on some mofos

Yep for Clemson. I wonder if this will come to fruition fast enough to effect our current top recruiting class.

Texas, Texas A&M, USC, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Oregon are fixing to raid the south of some of its best players.

What I'm simply saying is that IF the collegiate athletes do indeed start getting paid then they will have to pay taxes on that (whatever payments, endorsements, etc. they get)
Right, but not scholarships. You said taxes on scholarships.

I think Clemson has already established itself enough
They have 2 titles in the last 3 years and are pumping out first round draft picks
Nike will pay guys at Clemson top dollar to appear in billboards etc
