Strong team, but Roth gets credit there too with a great game plan. Double team/bracket Barbe's best WR, mush rush/contain their athletic QB, and when on offense they ran the play clock down to one second on EVERY snap, limiting Barbe to 7 possessions for the game.

Somebody was at that game...

Yep, Damian Williams had excellent clock control, don't remember any delay of game penalties either.

Same question asked almost a decade ago.

It’s always been a debate between 1990 Ruston and 1998 West Monroe. Before my time but the 1990 Ruston team were national champs.

1985 John Curtis. Culmination of 3 straight titles and 3 years undefeated, multiple college prospects!

I know that bastrop team mastered the crack back block that took a lot of players out of the game. Back when it was legal.

Happened at least 3 times a game. Extremely physical team. Brad Bradshaw is the AD now and refuses to coach because they won't let coaches coach the way he coaches lol. He was an intense coach. I've always liked and respected Brad. I played baseball with Rueben Randle and told him every morning I'd bring him 20 bucks tomorrow if he'd commit to LSU lol. He was so quiet and soft spoken. Always was a good kid. But yeah those teams were a sight to see. They had attitude. They were gonna beat your arse and tell you about it while it was happening there were so many awesome games during that stretch. I loved it. Bastrop really came together during that period of time and it wasn't too long after the mill had shut down so it was really needed.

These threads always make me long for the good ole days so much. They’ve ruined high school football in this state with the split/ politics.

Woodlawn (Shreveport) had the great Joe Ferguson at QB and easily defeated a very talented Holy Cross team in 1968.

Ruston 90 was super impressive in person. Best looking HS team I’ve ever seen in person by a mile.

Bishop Sullivan had to go up to Bastrop in the 1st round as the #31 seed playing the #2 seed in 02. First play of the game best LB from bishop got cracked and absolutely de-cleted, set the tone for the game and they got roasted 60-6. I played for bishop starting in 05 (st michael by then) and they showed it to us on film one rainy day just to show how good Bastrop was. They actually ended up losing to Op walker in the quarters though

Everyone that age remembers the Woodlawn SH at Chalmette semifinal, but not many remember that Holy Cross was beat by them in the quarterfinals.

Yep. I was a youngin back then but went to just about every home game. I'm glad it's illegal now, but the whole crowd would go "OOOOOH" on a big hit and I loved it those Bastrop teams were MEAN.

Pretty sure that was Mackey's first year at Bastrop just after Katrina. People can say what they will, but those teams were something really special. There was a constant buzz in Bastrop. Everyone talked about it in public, everyone wore Rams shirts and those stands were PACKED every Friday night. We were there loud and proud. Those years gave the community something to be excited and happy about after tons of people lost their jobs from IP closing down. A few dozen of those kids got D-1 and D-2 scholarships , some turned pro and I know Randle gave back to the community. People still talk about it. I'm glad I got to see it.

Not that it matters that much, but '98 WM finished No.2 in in the nation behind DeLaSalle of California, the team that a recent magazine article (that I unfortunately cannot cite at the moment) declared the greatest HS football team ever.
