Athletic story on the Aikman/Buck drama

Some additional stuff in it that I don’t think has been reported yet.

ESPN executives had observed the tension over the first four years with Buck and Aikman. The two had cycled through five “Monday Night” producers and directors before finally feeling comfortable with the tandem of ESPN lifer Steve Ackles and Artie Kempner, a former Fox colleague.
Sources briefed on Buck’s point of view claim that Aikman’s barking orders for replays he desired made situations untenable for the production staff, while sources with knowledge of Aikman’s perspective believe that Buck is a master of manipulating to get what he wants.
There had been an off-air unease between the duo through the first five weeks of this season, intensified by the fact ESPN chose Buck over Aikman for a new contract.
According to the recollection of sources with direct knowledge of the encounter at SoFi Stadium, Buck initiated the conversation by saying to Aikman, “You are not going to f—ing talk to me?”
Aikman, according to sources aware of his thinking, felt Buck wanted to force a public backlash to appear as the good guy. As the discussion went on, Buck defended himself by saying, “I’m not the reason you don’t have a contract.”
The 59-year-old Aikman, who sources said had long harbored feelings that Buck was behind the incessant producer and director turnover during their “Monday Night” tenure, shot back, “I just never thought you’d do it to me.”
Buck, 57, responded, “They got rid of them because you were screaming at them.”

Fox’s No. 2 game analyst, Greg Olsen, is widely considered by people inside the sports-media industry to be the favorite to replace Aikman on “Monday Night Football,” though ESPN could try to convince Peyton and/or Eli Manning, Travis and/or Jason Kelce or may hold out the possibility of using Kirk Herbstreit, though he just re-signed an NFL deal with Prime Video.
quote:
Upon arriving at ESPN, they handled their new employer differently. Buck was in contact with top executives, doing extra assignments, like “Good Morning America” and “Sports Jeopardy,” and focusing on lining up his next contract. Aikman would do his job well and go home, banking that everything would work out as it had for the most part during his Hall of Fame playing and successful business careers.
quote:
In the summer of 2025, three years after Aikman departed from Fox, the network held a retirement party for its studio analyst Jimmy Johnson at the luxurious Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes.
When Aikman signed with ESPN, he left Fox in flames, his relationship with the network in tatters, with strained communication at the end a core issue.
Still, for the beloved Johnson, Fox Sports executives let bygones be bygones, and Brad Zager, now the network’s president, invited Aikman, Johnson’s three-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback, to make a surprise appearance.
Aikman took the stage in front of his old Fox teammates to a standing ovation. He grew a little emotional, offering some nice words about his old network before adding, according to three sources present:
“In case anyone is wondering, the grass isn’t always greener.”

This is what it ultimately comes down to.
But it’s also pretty clear working at espn fricking sucks

This is all fascinating, but why in the hell are they letting it play out in public? I know the video surfaced of the two of them getting into it before the game a couple of weeks ago, but that should have been the end of it. Neither one are doing anything to slow this down.

I don't care about multi millionaires cat fighting.

This is very believable. Buck was groomed for this profession.

Buck strikes me as a guy who knows how to play the game of thrones.

Wouldn’t mind Peyton but would rather watch 9/11 jumper videos than MNF with the Kelces or Eli.

in other words both are egotistical jerks that make working conditions miserable for everyone
Aikman gonna act like a total dick during Super Bowl coverage

I think it's more he's just a good company man who understands the value of social capital. He clearly did a bunch of goodwill shite that he wasn't paid for to be a suckup, and he's being rewarded for it. He's the definition of a company man.

I still can't believe what these networks pay for this talent.
Nobody watches these games because of who is in the booth. Fifteen mil + for Buck's new contract.
You could find someone to do it for 1/10th of that.

Is he doing that? He's coming off pretty whiny and this also proves how he's just flat out less valuable than Buck.

All of this. Aikman is good at his job but he is in his position because of who he was in his playing career and more importantly who he played for the Cowboys.
.
Buck was groomed for this job and nepotism carried him the rest of the way. He knows how the games are played behind the scenes in that business. He was born rounding 3rd an headed for home. I could totally see him being a entitled bitch

ESPN is dumb for fricking this all up. Just pay Aikman and enjoy a pretty solid situation at MNF.

nepotism definitely in play with Buck but the salaries back then aren't close to what they are today

I don't watch a game for who is in the booth, but it can sure ruin a game listening to some of these broadcast teams.

He’s been around for almost 40 years. Maybe 3 decades ago

His agents approached ESPN wanting $38 MM, same as Tom Brady. They laughed at him and the agents said OK can we at least get the same raise as Buck. Again they said thanks but no thanks.
