Robo QB

He basically rebelled against his entire upbringing and sandbagged his career to say frick you to his father.

Plus he was so restricted growing up, drugs were the ultimate rebellion and football was an albatross of bad memories.

I won't lie; You hand me a guaranteed contract worth tens of millions I'm going to be looking to make sure I can walk when I'm 70 versus busting my arse.

This has to be one of the top answers.

All-world talent out of college. Never did anything with it.

He had Johnny football syndrome. He was a mental patient and couldn't hold it together. If you know that much about him, I'm not sure how you haven't heard this guy talk about his illness.

Seems like he was almost forced into playing by his father.

He said something pretty profound, something to the effect of just because you're good at something doesn't mean you were meant to devote your life to it.

Mainzell seems like he was more just a general frickup outside of football all his life, who was coddled and enabled by his parents and coaches because of his talent. Which is not at all like having the sort of highly restricted upbringing of Marinovich, and falling apart in basic rebellion.

If anything they are sort of complete opposites (or maybe better, opposite sides of the same coin) in that if Mainzell had been given a bit more discipline and structure earlier, he may have held it together, while if Marinovich had been given a bit more leeway, he may have been able to do the same.

Well no shite, when you have your first hamburger at age 19, you're gonna be fricked up.

His upbringing was that of a Soviet Olympic athlete.

Outside forces and experiences can cause mental illness. Its not just all DNA.

It was refreshing to hear him say on Break Point that he just wasn't the type of person who was capable of training non-stop.

People are surprised to find out Ricky rushed for more than Earl Campbell, Larry Csonka, Roger Craig, and guys like that.

Some of the names mentioned here at least had a few productive years.

These are the ones I’m most curious about. Players that were good, but seemed like they could have been even better if they cared more. I’m not judging if that’s good or bad. To each his own.

Blackmon was an alcoholic which was a big part of the problem.

Aaron Hernandez count?

Tiger didn't care that he was smashing hookers instead of focusing on family and career.

I think Tiger was likely smashing hookers the entire time.

Seems to me that the best athletes focus on career to the detriment of their families. You rarely see an elite athlete that has no type of allegations of cheating. Quite honestly I don't know why they get married unless it's about having children.

While the whole not seeming to care became basically it's own sort of meme for him, he actually had a much longer and probably even more successful career than one would have ever thought, if you think about it.

I mean, he spent basically a decade as a starting NFL QB coming out of freaking Vanderbilt.

Absent the meme/schitck deal, one could argue he vastly overachieved in his career.

I think Cutty likes to play up that persona. You aren't an 11 year starting QB in the NFL without caring a whole, whole lot about what you do.

T Mac is a good candidate. Raw talent but was a lot like James Hardin and often didn't put in effort.

TMac was great and improved dramatically from his rookie year. His body let him down.

A man among boys in college. Younger folks have no clue how good he was.

I’ll add Stanley Roberts as a wasted talent. He used to school Shaq in practice. He just couldn’t stay out of trouble.
