Athletes that wasted talent because they didn’t care

Who are the poster children for this? I’m not talking about guys who died, went to prison, etc. I’m talking about athletes that just didn’t seem like they had the passion to get to the elite level. Joe Barry Carroll had the nickname “Joe Barely Cares”, and Jay Cutler always struck me as this type of player. Who do you all have?

Jamarcus Russell seems like a safe bet for this thread.

Also, Hayensworth could be great when he tried. Then he got paid:

Ricky Williams has to make the list

Jay Cutler
While the whole not seeming to care became basically it's own sort of meme for him, he actually had a much longer and probably even more successful career than one would have ever thought, if you think about it.
I mean, he spent basically a decade as a starting NFL QB coming out of freaking Vanderbilt.
Absent the meme/schitck deal, one could argue he vastly overachieved in his career.

Jay Cutler had as much arm talent as anyone in the league for years. He was not the gym rat type that maximized his potential coming out of lowly Vanderbilt. He was as talented as anyone.

You are right, no doubt, but these are the guys I find most intriguing. Lots have listed straight up busts. Cutler wasn’t a bust, neither was Ricky Williams, but the common thought is that they could have even been better.

Yeah the first time I saw him play for Vandy it was like holy shite, this guy's arm is beyond elite.
Michael Vick is one. After he got out of prison, he did an interview with Mora Jr where he said all the DVDs he was supposed to take home for film study just piled up in his car.

And he was a really good starting QB for over a decade on mostly mediocre teams.
I don't know how that's "wasted talent."
That's nothing less than a lot of other players who are considered in posterity as really good NFL quarterbacks, if you're not blinded by the meme.
