Cancel the card.
An easy fix, but the stuff you want gets cancelled as well. I did that one time and it wound up being just as much if not more of a PIA.

Canceling a card is free.
You have the statements listing everything paid on the card.
Im struggling to see the difficulty.
Fwiw, I set a calendar reminder for subscriptions on my phone calendar. I know the cycle dates years after I sign up so I do not need to cancel a card.
We recently watched Swordfish on Howdy for the same cost as a rental. Im 99% positive i will cancel before the month is up. But in case i dont, the monthly reminder is on my phone repeating.

I see there are differing opinions of used vs new and cash vs loans for vehicles in this thread.
I went through 3 shitty used cars in high school and college. They constantly had problems and I sold all 3 for basically nothing. When I graduated and got a job I immediately financed a brand new car. 10 years later and the only work it's needed that I couldn't do myself was a broken weld on the AC condenser that had to be replaced.
My wife and I are both going to probably need new vehicles in the next 3-5 years and I'm dreading it. I always read that you should by used but I guess I'm a bit scarred by it. And it's hard to justify paying cash if you can get a rate under 5%

I try to buy genetic where I can.
Some things I just can’t do it. For example. I will only eat Blue Pkate mayo.
Others I have found lower cost subs. For example the Sam’s Club toilet paper is just fine.

I used the virtual card a few times. Thanks. I’ll do that from now on.

Don't buy anything unless you think about it for a week. The longer the better. May not need ot after all.
Use what you already have, better yet, learn to do without.
Count the money in your pockets before you leave the house in the morning. Recount when you get home.
Did I mention Don't spend money?

Time your bowel movements to only go when you are at the office. You will be surprised at the amount you save on toilet paper.

I always do an Uber Eats or Instacart shop if I’m going to be going the same direction to run errands

I know of a few couples that are Dave Ramsey-ers and they live very frugal and well below their means (too low and yes there can be such a thing). I should have clarified that I am not talking about the "living paycheck to paycheck" financial stress but rather the over importance of everything Ramsey teaches like "avoid debt like the plague" and "outrageously generous" "pay cash for big purchases" etc. I see those principles make people my age pull their hair out and causes unnecessary stress.

quote:What you have to realize is that there are financially illiterate people everywhere who need the basic kind of program that Ramsey provides. It is not for everyone, and certainly not for those of us who already understand finance and have discipline. Most people don't have a clue -- that's why his stuff is marketable.

Not so much a trick…but a Mindset:
Income - Savings = Expenses
We paid ourselves 1st. Expense budget was decided after savings / investments were decided.
We use a budget to help us deliver.
This is NOT FIRE! Far from that mindset. More about discipline within our means.
I estimate that this mindset, as lived in 1st 10-years of career, contributed more than 50% of retirement portfolio that was built over 30-yrs. Start discipline early is the point!

What tricks do you use to spend less money?

As a family of four with two teens; food is a big spend for us. Obviously; we eat at home a lot to save money.
A hack I use is shopping at my local Restaurant Depot. They are a chain and have stores throughout the country. Most people assume you have to have a business license or membership to shop at these restaurant supply houses. You do not; in fact, with RD you can get unlimited day passes and typically only pay 3-5% more than those with memberships/licenses.
Sure; you’re buying entire loins and 40lbs of chicken at a time; but, if you have some basic butchery skills, a freezer and a good vacuum sealer the savings are significant.
Often half of what Costco charges. I bought boneless skinless chicken breasts just a few weeks ago for a little over $1 per lb.
