Why do players play well for some coaches, and play like absolute dog shite for others?

Perhaps you should inquire with the players about that.

I get that 90% of you want CPM gone (I do too FWIW) but the players also must be held accountable for their terrible play.

Player rankings have steadily declined over the past few seasons.

The players aren't playing well. We can see that. It's pretty well understood that a coaching staff is expected to both recruit players who have the talent to put your program over the top, and to be able to develop those players, and instill a winning attitude. We're not seeing much development, and it sure would seem to be hard for a coach to light a fire under players when he's sulking on the bench. I don't know what he says at practice, but his in-game demeanor makes it difficult for me to believe he's much, if any, different at practice.

For what it's worth, though, I'll mention a couple of player related things that bothered me last night: Crews should have caught that ball in the third inning. I don't care how far he had to run, he got there, and it wasn't that hard of a catch. And then he let another blooper somehow land in front of him in medium left-center. I've not been impressed with his reads or his concentration, as he has dropped a couple of balls now.

And that bunt single in the fifth really opened the door for what immediately followed. I have no idea why Milazzo didn't pick that up. It was right in front of him, and should have been a relatively easy play. Instead, for reasons I can't understand, he decides to let it roll, and then the announcers acted like it was an awesome bunt. From there, you knew it was about to get ugly; and it did.

Guys don't play with a presence of mind. The moment seems WAY too big for them, far too often. That's where this team needs a fire to be lit. But where's that going to come from, is the question?

For just about every player on this team it is their first rodeo. And what makes it more obvious is that the rest of the league, at least the teams we’ve played so far, have more experienced players than ever due to covid. We will show up better with some experience at this competition level. This team is green at the point when the rest of the league mature.

Seriously dude, you answered your own question in your post. When literally everything is falling apart it's probably not the individual pieces. The players can accept responsibility but it's the leadership that needs to right the ship and this one has been taking on water for a long time.

He’s not the head recruiter. He does go see some recruits but not all. In the end, he’s the one offering a spot on the roster. He’s in control. Is that fair?

Because he sucks and has now for a long time. He needs to go and LSU needs to have more pride in what is a storied baseball program and stop treating it like it's a side sport for us. Get rid of him and you will see the coaches jumping at the chance to coach this baseball team in recruit for this program.

Who runs the damn program? Who brings these players in? Who develops these players? Who sets the line-up? Who makes the pitching calls?

Now.....answer those questions. Should the blame fall to that person, or a college kid on that persons team?

You can assemble an all star team of 1st round draft picks and they won't make a regional without solid leadership, guidance and development. Similarly, we have had consistent top 5 classes and are currently 1-6 in league play.

I blame travel ball.

We don't see this in other sports. When teams fail, coaches and players both get blamed.

But these college baseball players, all their careers they are sent to showcase events and basically have smoke blown up their rears telling them how great they are. They have been treated "special" since 6 year old coach pitch travel ball.

CPM is not a bad coach... but CPM can't seem to get through to these kids. He's an old school coach in a new school world.

We probably need a coach that can coddle and rah rah these kids.

The players do share in this debacle but this has been a downward trend since the 2018 season. CPM and Dunn have always looked tight and uncomfortable out there and when I watch baseball I always look for swagger and body language and those teams that exude it take after their coaches. CPMis well accomplished and has done great things at LSU but losing more games over the 18-19 season then dating back to 80-81 season since that happened, having a very high team ERA during that time, high base on balls average in conference. I know the league has caught up with the pioneers like State and LSU but let's inject some energy back into this program. I see no way Woodward fired Paul as all we can hope for is a retirement. My vote is for Lane Burroughs as HC who is currently at La Tech. Lastly, LSU may be considered a top 5 baseball job but if you think you are prying away the top 10 coaches in the experts opinion to leave for LSU your smoking crack

I never understand these threads. The coach is paid to win games. He is paid to recruit the best players possible, develop those players and put them in the best position to succeed which includes hiring the right assistants, making the best in game decisions and to make sure they're in top physical condition. There's a reason why the head coach has a win loss record attached to his name. It's because it is his sole responsibility to win games.

If the pitching coach or hitting coach sucks, that's the head coach's fault. He picks and chooses his assistants.

Because it is his job to keep the program going and performing at the highest level. He gets a check . . . A BIG arse CHECK . . . to do that job. The players are kids looking for an opportunity to showcase their talents. Some will seize it. Many do not. EVERY COACH has to deal with that. Paul is failing at that job. He's not motivating or inspiring his players. He is not putting his players in a position to succeed. At some point, that is draining and dispiriting. Blame the players? bullshite!

Who recruited the players? Either their evaluations are poor or they aren’t getting the most out of the kids when they get to campus.

In every sport it starts with the head coach. Its not recruiting, they are among the top every year. When you have true freshman come in and out play your junior and seniors every year. And it seems like it happens every year. The kids don't get better and that is a coaching problem. When you recruit in top 5 every year and your team is young . That is a coaching problem. I can see if they were able to be drafted after one year and you kept losing players . But they have to stay for 3 years. How many other teams have recruited in top 5 for 4 years and can't even make top 25 in country.
