re: Why I think Clemson is overrated and not as good as preseason media thinks

I feel like guys get way more tired in game 1 than they do later in the year.
Using conditioning as an excuse for game 1 is pretty weak. Besides, doesn't the same thing apply to Clemson?

completely agree with you, but half this board wants us to open with a cupcake.
As a fan, I love the fact LSU is opening with Clemson and not a smaller conf. opponent. But from a competitive standpoint, the game doesn't make much sense. A 10-2 LSU (with non conference wins over LA Tech, Grambling, Western Kentucky and, say, Miami-OH) would have a significantly better chance of making the CFP over a 9-3 LSU team with 2 SEC losses and a loss at Clemson).
Obviously the easy answer is "just beat Clemson". But the reality is the risk of a loss at Clemson FAR outweighs the benefit of a win at Clemson.

Side note: I saw the stat that since the transfer portal started, the most transfers a team that won the natty took the year before was 9. We took 18 this year. We’ll see if we can break that trend.
That’s a pretty small sample size though.

that might all be true, but Brian Kelly is still doing first game prep for the Tigers. He hasn't exactly shown he’s very good at preparing for season openers

I agree. And I'm not saying it means anything, I just thought it was interesting being such a big discrepancy.

Doesn’t matter. We need our UNPROVEN OL to be better than their DL.
THAT is the key.

THAT is the key.
We need our OL to hold their own, we don't need them to dominate. We particularly need our OL to be able to run block. If we can run, we can wear their DL out a bit and slow down their pass rush. If we can't run, we will need Nuss to be extremely efficient with his decision making.

none of it has made sense....they were not good last year and now they have like 5 guys projected 1st round. Something just doesn't add up.
Posted on 8/4/25 at 6:55 pm to Saunson69
LSU’s achilles heal is their OL that has never played a game together. They will really struggle at an away game. Im not sure LSU can overcome this problem.

Clemson is always tough, especially at home. Their history over the last decade or so deserves some respect.
LSU will have to play a very good game…

Season over with a loss in Game 1. BK is, at best, a 2 loss every season SEC coach.

A win all but guarantees you a playoff berth unless you really throw up on yourself and lose 3 conference games in which case you are not making the playoff anyway especially with 4 cupcakes OOC

I dont know, it seems they're excited about what they have coming back, we also have some excitement with our team speed and experience. I think we really have to see the teams play a couple games before any one knows who is a title contender and who is just another top 15 team.

Id rather play Grambling to be honest.
You get a warm up practice game to work the kinks out and the fans get to see an entertaining HBCU Band at halftime...........

stop the QB scramble, and we will win.

Certainly not overrated but, if wishful thinking makes you feel better about this game, so be it.

I can tell you this, no way we sniff a natty in 2007 had we played Kent St. instead of playing and trouncing Va Tech that year.
I think an SEC team can absolutely make the playoff at 9-3 if one of those losses is a game 1 defeat at Clemson. Now you can't lose to Vandy or Kentucky like Bama and Ole Piss did last year, you forfeit you right to bitch about it if you do that IMHO.
So if the other losses are say to 2 SEC teams that finish in the top 15 and Clemson finishes in the top 10 - there is a very good chance we would make the playoff IMHO even with 3.
But I personally think we'll go 10-2 this season, so it won't matter.....Geaux Tigers!!

We lose at Clemson & we can only afford one SEC loss. That is rare for most SEC teams today.
That only matters if the national championship is your goal. And if that is the case, a three loss team has no chance of winning the national championship even if you put them in the playoffs.

Home field advantage is the difference in this game
We would be favored by 3 at our stadium
