we’ll see how this approach works for OM. Are LSU fans willing to sacrifice HS recruiting for top tier portal recruits though?

As others in here have mentioned, OM has decided (probably accurately) they aren't going to be able to consistently compete with programs like Alabama, Georgia, Texas, LSU, Auburn, etc in high school recruiting. Thus, they are trying to compete with those programs by going hard in the transfer market. The thought probably being: (a) We allocate our NIL funds to pay "veteran" players with proven production (even if that means less funds to entice HS recruits) and/or (b) We catch those 4-5 star HS player who didn't consider us out of HS, but now will consider us after they didn't like their situation at the power schools that signed them out of HS.

It's like a baseball team choosing to build through "free agency" rather than through a draft and develop approach. The upside is you hit big in free agency and have a great year. The downside is you essentially have to hit at a high rate every year because if you "miss" on your free agents there isn't much talent behind them to fill the void.

Also, if you look at what they are expected to return from this season combine with what looks to be a VERY favorable 2024 schedule (no one with a pulse in the non-conf. schedule; No Alabama or Texas. Georgia and Oklahoma at home with the only potential tough road game looking to be against LSU), next year is probably the year for them to go "All in"

What's to stop colleges from paying kids out of eligibility to continue playing? Are they going to collective bargain eligibility limits? That cat is hard to put back in the bag when you start talking employer/employee relationships. Whole other world of problems arise through that avenue. Then you have the NFL problem.

I don’t think this will be a major issue. The NFL has already tried and failed to produce a viable developmental league and they don’t seem to be interested in backing Spring Football as a cheap and easy way to do it, either. The NBA G League is another example of how people do not give a shite about or watch these leagues. They are a money pit. People support college football for different reasons.

Why would the NFL want to curtail its free use of college football to develop players for them? The only issue they will have is if this new college football entity tries to change how eligibility works, as you mentioned. But they won’t. The NFL holds the trump card there in controlling the entrance age to the Draft. They could change that by one or two years and kill this entire setup before it ever gets going.

The NFL will benefit from players having even more emphasis on football at this level, with year-round supervised practice and training they don’t really get today. As long as this new college football entity keeps the eligibility capped at 5 or maybe 6 years, the NFL will be happy to let an even more robust separated P5 work to their advantage.

As for this new college football entity, which would likely have its own board and commissioner covering all teams, they will have to work with the NFL. The NFL has the upper hand with control of the Draft age and the better quality pro product. College football won’t have the leverage to push eligibility or anything else the NFL might have major issues with, at least not for a long time.

As for how long it will take to set up- this is like the Patriot Act. Plans for doing this have already been drawn up by every conference in preparation for the day this comes. It’s just a matter of boiling it down to a single plan that all will agree on. When this much money is on the line, as with the new playoff, they will get it all done quicker than most think.

The bigger hang up with be how a players union gets formed and how much they get pushed around in an initial collective bargaining agreement.

They are spending a lot of money and it isn’t sustainable! What BK is doing builds depth and future. Ole Miss not so much

Problem is, once you develop them and they have success you have to pay them to keep them or someone else will. The NCAA has fricked sports with this portal, free agency BS.

Sure it's mostly coach speak, but Kelly has stated that this is one reason why they are putting such a focus on in-state players. A player that grew up watching and wanting to play for LSU is less likely to transfer.

I have a long time hate and I hate it when OM is doing something that I wish LSU was doing. Not sure why you asked that question, but the answer is Go To Hell Ole Miss!

Very likely that Sunbelt Billy gets fired next year. I think Kiffin is shooting his shot in ‘24 for the Florida job.

I am not so sure there is a right way anymore. It appears that when players are not being developed to succeed (see our D players), they tend to bolt for either money or better coaching or both.
LSU is lacking in both areas right now and even HS top players are paying attention.
I think LSU needs to play for both...HS top players, NIL money and transfers for better coaching and $.
I hate what the system has become, especially when I see my alma mater not faring very well in it.

This worked so well at Nolen’s last stop. It got a Head Coach fired and a bunch of assistants let go.
Yea, this should work.
Kelly signed 64% of his 2024 class from the state of Louisiana. Keeping those kids in state is a major plus.

Yep

Can it work yes, but your odds are better building through recruiting HS players and building a solid base.

I agree. Losing Nolen was a real kick in the teeth, because I think I had been reading LSU was in the lead for him and we really need someone in his position since Smith has been such a disappointment.

It's still the better model...

you're going to have to pay a starter with a year or 2 of college under his belt either way; but this way, it's a guy who's been in YOUR system, and developed/evaluated by your staff at your practices. You will have a better idea of what he can do, and he will have a better grasp of the system and should be able to run more advanced schemes.
You bring in a guy from elsewhere, and you're likely to have a break-in period, while he adjusts to your system.

They have spent 15 million in the portal. They are going all in on this year being the year. Let’s see if Joey Freshwater can handle their personalities.

Bro there’s a very real possibility that two or three of your top five NIL earners last year were suspended half the year or couldn’t see the field and chose to quit 4 games in. What message does that send to the other 80 something players on your roster you try and roll out there each week. This season could have gotten out of hand real quick. 2020 all over again. You have to be careful and not careless too.

Just curious why we are assuming it’s just that “we” are not spending money. I am sure if BK had a player he needed and wanted to have that it would happen with the money.
I think the ole miss situation is that they are thinking next year is their window.
