Clueless on how to coach them up. It looked like when Coach O brought back Polini.

A great scheme can make average players good. Just like great players can make an average scheme look good.

I’m just praying that better coaching will make the difference because if not we’re looking at another frustrating season.

All of those guys catch more shite than they deserve. They all made some plays and they all blew some plays. The thing people fail to recognize is that often the guy who is trying to make up for someone else's mistake is the guy who looks bad. Our entire defense was so bad, it was hard to tell how good anyone would be if others were doing their jobs.

Penn was always a decent LBer, but it’s hard to be effective with poor DL play. Major Burns generally played well downfield, but terrible over the top. Ryan had little to show for last year. I remember he made a few impressive plays, but overall wasn’t good. With that said, I think our defensive staff is miles ahead of last year’s and I expect all 3 to be at least moderately improved.

You should go watch tape from last year. I don't know how you could say this seriously if you already had.

You know how hard it is to play his role when;

1. There's no QB pressure
2. The DBs are lost every play
3. You have a player like Omar Speights playing next to you

I think he was one of the brighter spots on an awful defense

At least major had the pic 6 vs mizzou. Sage was hot garbage.

Greg Penn will not turn a corner because there is no corner for him to turn. The guy was a stud last year, even though most fans have no idea.

Oh so I guess he’s playing at an all-pro NFL linebacker level already right now. No room for improvement…….(sarcasm)

Every player can always improve a lot in different areas.

Will those guys finally turn a corner this year or are we in for a long year if no one else steps up to take their jobs? All 3 of them have shown a lot of physical limitations honestly. I’m not sure how much room they actually have for improvement.

Still a couple wks out and we already have a “shite on the players” thread…

I may or may not agree with you but I just dont think this is the time for that kind of thread. Really makes recruits get fired up about us.

The opinions on this board about the quality of Penn's play are night and day. There are some who think he is really good,
I do not share that opinion.
Penn's biggest problem does not seem to be diagnostic, he just seems slow.

I’m sure having a shitty cast around you doesn’t help, but like I said, go watch the tape. His inability to tackle at a position like LB is unacceptable. It was very, very bad and he was definitely one of the worst offenders.

I judge no one on the defense we saw last year. Whit looked great early before he was coached.

I trust that we will get the best out of what we have this year. Then I’ll judge

I have little faith in Burns or Ryan. Odds of them being replaced into the girth of the season is high. Maybe even after USC.

Penn is an interesting player who has flashed at times - pretty good at run fits but bad at working to the sideline. He may be a step too slow. If he can get through his reads quicker and process the play at a high level it may make up for his lack of speed. We need a big thumper to meet lineman or RBs in the hole.

Sage went portal and nobody grabbed him. Says a lot. To me, he's allergic to contact and runs away from it...

Sage and Major literally did everything in their power to avoid contact last year, it was infuriating.

Sage was moved to corner because he was a good tackler.

Scheme can’t help sage Ryan

He’s been here 4-5 years and the biggest play hes made was a fumble recovery vs Bama

tackling is a lost art these days
the defense has to get more physical at all levels

bayou85, you seriously need to visit your optometrist. Nobody in this thread sees Sage as a good tackler but you.

no recruit will make a decision what university to attend based on an internet fan message board.
