Saban flirted with the NFL every year it seems.

Then had Sexton to once again force LSU to increase his salary each year. That got old with fans, AD Bertman, the BOS, and the TAF.

Coaching then just like now is a a freakin' business deal with it. I watched episode one, and he got his arse blasted real good for leaving the Dolphins mid season to take the Bama job just like Lane with coming here. Saban regretted how it all went down and felt bad about just like Lane did coming here. Lane wanted it to work out better than it did, but the opportunity came calling just like Bama came calling for Nick.

In hindsight, LSU should have paid him whatever he wanted...

He was always going to go to the NFL. He says in the doc he viewed it as the next logical level/step for him. When you're great at something, you want to practice it, whatever it is, at the highest level. It's human nature. That's why I am an adult film star.

In hindsight, he probably should have been able to figure out that he wasn't really an NFL type coach. But it's water under the bridge for me, either way and my point isn't one of bitterness at all, more than just fact.

And yet if the rumors are true Nick wanted to come to BR after Miami, skip was an ABSOLUTE IDIOT for not hiring him back.

He was always going to go at some point, it was just the stage in his career we got him in.

The NFL was still considered the pinnacle of coaching then, the money and prestige was still better. The jump from college to the NFL has become more rare in recent years

LSU did pay him what he wanted - every year. At the end of each season he got a raise and an extension. It was never enough for him.

I remember the year when Saban signed an extension, got a raise, interviewed with the Jacksonville Jaguars and then lied about it to Skip in the course of one week. When he ended up at Bama he was groveling to come back to LSU. Even if he had come back what reason did we have to ever think he would have stayed?

Nick Saban was a very immature man who could not decide what he wanted to do when he grew up.

Skip was not an idiot but just doing his job in a conventional manner without hindsight that we all have. In hindsight, he should have let Miles go and welcomed Nick back. It would have been highly criticized and expensive move much like Lane coming here but it would have been a brilliant move in the long term. Can you imagine the number of championships?

We were not firing a coach who just had two 11-2 seasons and two blowout wins vs Miami and ND in the bowls and was recruiting at an elite level, to replace him with a coach that bailed on you two years prior and went 9-3 his last year with several close wins to teams like Troy.

I know in 2026 with the benefit of hindsight it was the right move but in late 2006 when those conversations would have been had it was not so apparent. Even the first 5 years when Saban was there, Miles was 3-2 against him and was 1-1 in natties and was about to be 2-1 in favor of Miles until Bama got the rematch, which is when it all spiraled.

You can't blame Skip for that.

He almost went to Chicago the year before. If he didn’t go to Miami at the end of 2004, he would have gone somewhere else the next year. Or the next. Skip knew that. Everyone knew it. If he had been at Alabama, it would have been the same thing. He had to try the NFL as a head coach. It is what it is.

If he had come back to anywhere but Alabama, I would have been fine with it. The fact that it was at Alabama really stung. But, after we beat them in 2019, I stopped caring about it. Now, I just appreciate how great he was and I’m glad we had him for part of that.

I’m glad to see LSU fans embrace Saban again. Rejecting him is like rejecting part of our own history. I hope we have him back in Tiger Stadium one day with the 2003 team to properly thank him. 2028 for the 25th anniversary would be a great time and I can see Lane making it happen.

I hate this logic

Even in 2001 Saban was clearly a better coach than Miles or Orgeron or basically any coach ever

It was fricking clear

SEC championship year 2

Natty year 4

Les got the Lamborghini

Well, they are morons then. His price would have been a drop in the bucket, to win 2 or 3 more titles

You’re right but it’s even more than that.

People that didn’t follow it closely at the time can’t understand the parallels that were constantly being drawn between Saban and Belichick.

Saban won the SEC and Sugar Bowl in 2001 about a month before Belichick won his first Super Bowl in the same building.

Then he led LSU to the national championship about a month before Belichick won their second in three years.

He was being courted by Miami as the Pats were about to repeat and win a third Super Bowl in four years.

And at that point it was ALL about Belichick, Brady was still seen as a game manager winning with elite defense.

The history with Saban and Belichick in Cleveland and the great defenses in Baton Rouge, he was already seen as the next Belichick without ever coaching a game as HC in the NFL.

That’s why you had an owner, in the division with the Pats, throwing obscene amounts of money at him like that. He wasn’t just another good college coach. He was the understudy of the best coach in the NFL and “coaching trees” were all the narrative and today we are more aware of media narratives and how they drive public sentiment and organizational decisions.

Saban was going to the NFL, and nothing Skip Bertman could have said was going to change that.

It’s a great series so far, but Sexton and Saban even alluding to that and trying to make it look like Bertman gave away Bear Bryant pissed me off all over again

No one blamed Saban when he left, we were thankful for what he did.

But him dragging his feet cost us Spurrier, and that did annoy me at the time.

His quick exit from the challenge of the NFL to return to a division rival was brutal and reminded us how cold and calculated he was about everything.

Saban got booed off the field at halftime against Ole Miss that year in a game LSU ultimately lost. I know it's hard for many to not vieiw things through the lens of hindsight, but at that moment LSU fans weren't sold on him being the greatest coach ever. After that, LSU went on a great run to win the SECCG and fans loved him. But the following year wasn't great. But for a "miracle" LSU would have lost 5 of their last 6 games

Obviously everyone unanimously loved him once he won the NC in 2003 and hated to see him go after 2004. But that season wasn't a dominant season. LSU was lucky to beat Oregon State, got blown out at UGA, barely beat Troy, and blew the Citrus Bowl on the final play . The point is that fans loved Saban in 2004 and did not want to see him go. But he also wasn't necessarily viewed by anyone as the greatest HC in college football at that time.

Love him or hate him, Les had a tremendous first two seasons at LSU. He went 10-1 in a 2005 regular season that was complicated by Katrina: Moving the home opener to ASU, playing Tenn on a Monday because of Rita, playing 10 straight weeks without a bye (including the SECCG). He finished the season blowing out top 10 Miami. At the end of 2006 LSU was arguably the hottest team in the country, which included two road wins over two top 10 opponents. LSU was ranked 4th at the end of the regular season (including the SECCG) and was playing in a BCS bowl game. From the outside looking in there was ZERO reason to consider firing Les. He was recruiting well, winning double-digit games, and he had what was thought to be a loaded team coming back for 2007

To put this into better perspective Miles won a NC and had an opportunity for another in 06 if the refs didn't hose LSU on a phantom PI against Auburn. I don't think LSU fans realize how close Miles had LSU towards multiple more NC experiences. He almost went 2 years in a row. Beyond that, the main thing that slowed him down was he had to play Saban every year. Had Saban not been in the SEC, LSU likely was the dynasty of the SEC under Miles for his first half of his career here. Skip did not make the wrong decision at that time.

This board has this weird infatuation with taking a dump on Miles. He was goofy, quirky, and had his flaws but you can't argue with his body of work here. It's not all resources and LSU as you saw with BK. Miles was a much better coach than this board gave him credit for. LSU has not recovered so far yet since he left outside their 19 season. We've actually been mediocre for a decade+ outside 19. Miles was probably fired 3 years too late but he did an amazing job first part of his career at LSU. It was slowly downhill after 11.

Yup. He had a case of wanting to go back to the NFL. He had to get it out of his system.
