re: Saban flirted with the NFL every year it seems.

No. It's telling it like it is. Nothing LSU did academically, like the Athletic Center for Athletes, or annual raises was ever enough. At some point he should have said this where I belong and want to stay.
Ms Terry in the documentary, said after the 2003 championship they accomplished their goal of building and winning a championship. Their goal was accomplished. Saban wanted to do that elsewhere, at the NFL level.

I watched the episode of Saban about LSU. I think it was kind of shitty how they portrayed Baton Rouge and the LSU facilities to look like a third world shite hole. Also, apparently we didn't have any black players from Louisiana on the team either. Somehow I remember having plenty of black players, a brand new state of the art weight room, indoor practice facility, new office building and brand new East upper expansion and 92K capacity stadium when he got here.

Idk I'm watching it now and when he talks about it leaving, he really has a look of regret. LSU should have paid him end of story. It's our admin fault look at all the money we never knew was there now.

Those people are idiots.
If the storm doesn't happen, LSU may well have won the natty that year.

In hindsight, he should have let Miles go and welcomed Nick back
Miles had just gone 11-2 twice and boat raced Notre Dame in the Sugar bowl. And had a great team returning. Mind you Saban had only lost less than 3 games once.
It would have been WILD for Skip to fire Miles.

An internet search showed prior to coming to LSU from Michigan State University, he was known for having an interest in coaching in the NFL as a head coach, not as an assistant defensive coach
When Nick Saban was head coach at Michigan State (1995–1999), two NFL teams were notably linked to him:
1. New York Giants (1997) — The Giants reportedly offered Saban their head-coaching job after the 1996 season. He interviewed secretly with general manager George Young, but the deal fell through over disagreements about control of the coaching staff and personnel. ?
2. Indianapolis Colts (1998) — Reports circulated that Saban was about to sign with the Colts, but he publicly denied the speculation and said he intended to remain at Michigan State. ?
Bottom line: The New York Giants and Indianapolis Colts were the two NFL teams associated with Saban while he coached at Michigan State.

I personally enjoyed how he got misty eyed when he had to look into that camera for his documentary and say “I left”.
Worst mistake of his career and he knows it.

Yes but he had millions a year separating the two offers and probably would have left sooner or later if it wasn't miami. He had to go through that to know for himself that he belonged in the college game. Now a days college coaches make the same or more to stay in college and coach. Love of game can only take you so far, you do a job for money and you try and make as much as you can.

He’s widely considered the best coach in college football history and built a dynasty no one will ever come close to replicating and yet people convince themselves he has a single solitary regret about anything

Yes.. He thought the goal was NFL and had to find out for himself that wasn’t the best for him. unfortunately, LSU was the school he left to do that instead of the school he ended with

Nick went to Miami and thought he had Drew Brees coming too but the team doctor killed that move and the rest is history.

quote:They 100% are. Unless Skip Bertman was lying to me, Saban tried to come back for the 07 season. LSU couldn't fire Les (obviously) with the success he had in his first 2 seasons.
The rumors are not true lol.
Bama boosters essentially passed around a hat and put whatever money (or access to other sources of income) and brought him to Tuscaloosa.
quote:I understand your point, but Baton Rouge is substantially more similar to Tuscaloosa than it is Miami.
Baton Rouge, like Miami, is not a college town atmosphere. Tuscaloosa, while bigger than EL, is certainly more of the traditional college town feel that they clearly enjoy.

Sorry Pat, not trying to dox you but going to need you to explain your relationship to Skip and the context and exact wording before I’ll believe this. Otherwise, this is exactly how these rumors are perpetuated.
I heard Bertman answer a hypothetical question about Saban years ago that was wildly misinterpreted basically saying Les was doing great at the time and everyone was happy with him so it wouldn’t have been possible even if Saban was interested in coming back , not that he actually was.
If you’re saying you had a one on one conversation with Skip Bertman telling you that he turned down Saban/Sexton, can you explain your relationship and why he chose to tell you this information and not any number of people associated with the program over a dozen years and why no reporter has ever published even the slightest hint of this type of communication between LSU and Saban/Sexton in 2006?
Hell, ESPN (and Vrbo!
Skip himself was interviewed in the documentary, and many other times over the years, and he never alluded to what you are claiming he told you personally.
There’s just so much misinterpretation and wish casting with this stuff that you have to give more than that if you want to be taken seriously.
Mad respect for the windmill punt return though

Les was so out of the blue for that hiring cycle
I can’t even remember who I really wanted probably Jack del rio haha
It was very out of the blue lol.
Similar to the way Kelly came out of nowhere. That was one of the reasons I was happy with Kelly’s hire. It seemed like there was a plan that the powers that be kept quiet, and executed it to perfection.
I didn’t like the Miles hire, and felt like I was proven wrong. So I felt like Kelly had the potential to be another one of those, and he was far more qualified than I thought Miles was in 2005.
Regardless, as the rumors swirled that Saban was going to Indy or Chicago after the NC, I was all in on Spurrier coming back to college at LSU.
So when rumblings about the NFL started again in 04 after getting arse whipped by Georgia, I was extremely annoyed, as OBC was just sitting around for a year waiting for an opportunity.
Once Saban and Terry screwed us out of that chance, I was all about other successful college coaches that had struggled in the NFL.
Dennis Erickson and especially Butch Davis were next on my wish list. After those I liked Tetford and Pat Hill.
I was never really into the Del Rio hype like a lot of others were. Seemed like a Carroll knock off to me. Did that pop up again in 2012 when the Miles to Arkansas rumors were going around? Or was that the Gruden cycle lol
But yeah Miles was a head scratcher, and I was not happy with it. Luckily he proved me wrong and we had damn strong run for a decade before Saban strangled the life out of the him.

Was anyone in this thread at the Marriott Marquis in Atlanta the night before the 2007 SEC championship ? If so, you know the truth. He was coming back….
