Bianco is a black hole at the plate. There's no way in hell he is good enough at short to cover for a 250 bat.

The move tells me the bat has improved. I don't think he's getting a look there due to his defense. He must be hitting the ball well enough that Mainieri doesn't think he can keep him out of the lineup. SS would be odd though. 3B makes more sense.

How about everyone currently behind Bianco at SS?

You're already declaring 4 guys with a combined 40 plate appearances and about a third of a season's experience recruiting misses?

Sounds like the SS and 3B positions are big question marks.

the same posters who complain about PM pulling a pitcher too early, complain just as much if he leaves the pitcher in for a single pitch too late.
Can I complain about him putting in our worst pitcher on the roster who was also a freshman in the CWS in the most crucial moment of a must win game? Is that cool with you?

Mainieri has usually ended up playing the 9 best hitters and putting them in whatever their best position is. Problem is the last few years, we haven't had anywhere near that many good hitter on the team period.

In my opinion there are about 4-5 positions that should be rock solid thru the season. C, SS, CF, RF. If you are still unsure two days out. It is not a vote of confidence.

First off RF does not fit in with the rest. It is not a premium defensive position. 2nd base is more important for sure and I would put 3rd base over RF being more important especially at the college level. Secondly, these positions don’t have to be figured out game 1. Yes it is great when they are but if you still need to figure out 1 or 2 once actual games are played then it isn’t the end of the world.

You do know the last time LSU played a full season the shortstop was a second round draft pick right?

Outside of the one year when Hughes played at short most of the season because Josh Smith got hurt, and was great defensively but terrible offensively. LSU has been solid at the shortstop position going back to 2008 and freshman DJ Lemahieu was playing the position.

Predictions if Bianco starts at SS any significant amount of time:

1. Everyone will bash him constantly.
2. Everyone will beg for Bianco the minute someone else struggles.

Translation:

LSU doesn't have a shortstop just someone manning the position.

Well of course. I was surprised PM didnt mention cranford or safford this morning when discussing 3rd and short. Just thompson, bianco, hellmers, and arnold. If Tbob had any working knowledge of sports outside of football, he wouldve asked about where those guys fit in. But i guess im asking for too much from a baton rouge based radio show

It’s time for Paul to go. So many damn misses in recruiting have put us in this position. This team will struggle this year.

Since hiring:

2007 - Did not make tournament
2008 - CWS - 7th
2009 - CWS champion
2010 - Regional - Eliminated
2011 - Did not make tournament
2012 - Super Regional - Eliminated
2013 - CWS - 7th

2016 - Super Regional - Eliminated
2017 - CWS - lost championship
2018 - Regional - Eliminated

PM has said that Bianco has improved at the plate and is getting big hits. From a week ago.

quote:

Bianco, who entered the transfer portal last summer on Mainieri’s advice then stayed at LSU, has stood out this preseason. The junior has a .147 career batting average, but he has impressed Mainieri with his approach. Over the past two weeks, Bianco has hit two home runs. Earlier this preseason, he shot an opposite-field double off the fence with two strikes. Until now, he practiced as a projected backup, filling a hole in center field on Wednesday. “I'm toying with the idea of giving him another look in the infield over these next couple days,” Mainieri said.

Living proof that if you can hit a baseball they will find a spot for you even if its to lay down behind the pitcher and not move.

Cranford started 11 games at SS last year and was hitting 0.286.

In his first 6 starts he went 1 for 14 (0.071), but finished the final 5 games of the season 7 for 13 (0.538).

If we're sacrificing defense on the left side for offense then why not move Doughty to SS and let Bianco or someone else play 2B? I know Doughty's glove struggled last year but it was a shortened season and I would hope he has at least improved beyond what Bianco can do.
