This is the right kind of,hire. Woodward probably challenged PM to make tough decisions. Let Cain and Ochinko go earn their stripes.

Cain has more than earned his stripes. This hire of Smith in a volunteer role is best case scenario. I think anybody who wanted Cain fired just doesn't understand the massive value he brings to the staff. This lets him be wide open to recruit only. He won't even have to coach third anymore, even though he didn't do as terrible of a job as this board would make you believe.

Smith is already doing work. Hal Hughes was 2-4 with a double tonight.

Awesome that should raise Hal's BA up to 130. Anyway, bring in Eddie and the Chink has just left the building!

Will be funny if majority of players start taking off in summer ball.

Reading some of his virginia amd tulane team stats, he seems to have good slugging teams who score and have good BAs. Not so much on the stealing side. Walks seems to be up and down.

Rabalais discusses why the "volunteer" part of the job isn't really correct:
quote:

I’m told that at a school like LSU, a volunteer assistant can pull in a low six-figure income, mostly through working the school’s lucrative summer youth camp program.

That’s a big part of the reason Will Davis was able to afford to spend several seasons on the LSU staff before heading off to Lamar where he is now head coach.

A payoff like that can trump the full-time assistant coaches’ salaries of many less well-heeled baseball programs across the country.

LSU baseball has its new volunteer. The school announced Tuesday afternoon that it has hired former Tulane assistant Eddie Smith to be its new volunteer/hitting coach. Smith, who played under coach Paul Mainieri at Notre Dame, replaces former LSU standout Sean Ochinko in that role. “We’re extremely excited to add Eddie Smith to our staff, and we’re very fortunate to have him,” Mainieri said in a statement. “Eddie is a very experienced coach with a proven track record of success. He combines his intelligence and coaching ability with a tremendous work ethic, and he is going to be a very impactful asset to our program.”
It's official. LSU announces addition of Smith.

I read that Rabalais article earlier and thought he ended it in a shitty, insulting way:

quote:

In other words, austerity be damned. If schools won’t be allowed to cut a check for a third full-time assistant — the proposal, by the way, can’t come up for consideration again until 2021 — then mom and dad will write the checks when they send their little Alex Bregman and Aaron Nola wannabes to camp.

In other baseball news, we will be playing at Nicholls St on November 3rd for one of our fall exhibitions. We will also play at Nicholls in the regular season on Feb 19th. Those things were reported by Mike Gegenheimer but I don't remember what newspaper he works for.

He's probably just pissed off that a "volunteer assistant baseball coach" at LSU makes more than double what Rabalais' salary is at the Advocate.

I recall PM's comment at season's end where he stated if his guys are going to strike out so much they have to hit more homers. Problem solved.

Jesus

2 days after the last game of the season PM said he “didn’t anticipate” changes when asked by media

He never once said “not to expect” changes

Right. Penrod said it was foolish to even suggest this.

But yes Woody met with Paul and made a few suggestions.

Btw...Woody has brought his top assistant from ATM with him. Stephanie Rempe. She’s a very strong addition as is Brandy Douglass who also came from ATM. You guys who think Woody is sitting around being happy about underachieving programs are gonna be in for a surprise lol.

There are a lot of programs that would love to host a regional all the time like we do. That’s why I try never to take that stuff for granted, even though it seems like an underachievement.
