So CPM was just able to get a legit hitting coach to come to LSU as a volunteer coach while being able to keep your very good recruiting coordinator on staff.

I think people on here get caught up a bit too much on the word "volunteer." He's not going to be giving all his time to LSU, while having to pick up shifts at Walk-On's to pay his electricity bill.

I realize that, but I am curious where his money comes from. Does he become a TAF “Employee”?

I wonder if PM saw the hitters struggling in Summer ball and decided to make a change because of that

Maybe it kind of fell into his lap, and he couldn't pass it up.

Or maybe people were a bit uncomfortable with him saying to expect no changes and his boss gave him a little suggestion.

I am not 100% certain of all the places it comes from. I would guess TAF chips in some, assuming that is legal. I know a big chunk of it comes from the baseball camps.

PM basically said not to expect any coaching changes at the end of season press conference.

2 days after last game he said he wasn’t anticipating changes when asked
It’s not something that is all tied up in a bow that quickly
I doubt it has anything to do with summer ball, something he saw needed a change & has been working on getting it taken care of

I wonder if Ochinko got offered another gig or just got send packing.

If true, surprising that he is coming in a volunteer role. It's really best case scenario. I'm sure he will be paid very nicely, so that's probably all he cares about.

Makes you think, how much was the 3rd paid assistant really needed?

I would imagine it comes with some added benefits, which would make it easier to convince people to come in. Being a non volunteer coach would give you state benefits and retirement, etc being a state employee. I would guess that volunteers don't get this.

Again...I don't know this for sure. Just taking an educated stab at it. If anyone knows for sure, please correct me.

Oh boy,is he afraid to hire outside of his circle?

By all accounts, Smith is one of the better hitting coaches in the country. The fact he also played for CPM is purely anecdotal.

If LSU hitters see great improvements under him, similar to how Tulane did, then he would seem like a possible candidate to take over when Mainieri retires down the road. Maybe that opportunity was presented to him when being offered a volunteer spot. Make a bet on yourself in the short term, and it may pay off big time later.

I’d mentioned in May that a thorough evaluation of the baseball program would be facilitated by Woody following the seasons end and Paul would be given some strong recommendations about his staff.

Good move by Paul

I’ll share what I learned a couple of years ago.

When Sean Ochinko was first announced to be moving to “volunteer” hitting coach when Micah Gibbs blew out his knee playing pickup basketball, I asked Sean how could he pay his bills being a volunteer.

He laughed and said “I’ll be paid more as a volunteer coach than I was going to be paid in the job I had just accepted.” (He had just gotten hired by some investment advisor group or something similar after getting his degree following being LSU baseball’s undergrad assistant and first base coach for one season.)

I asked, “Who will pay you?” He said “TAF.”

He’s replacing Ochinko not Cain

I can’t believe we’re getting someone this good to come in as a volunteer coach.

I know they get paid through camps and stuff but this is huge.

It’s needed for off campus recruiting flexibility. Volunteer coaches can’t recruit off campus.

He will make more with the camps than as a Tulane assistant. That may not have been the case 10 years ago when Tulane paid their coaches better. Also, it’s still a stepping stone. He’s in the sec now.

This.

Especially with how the recruiting season falls in baseball.

Every year at least one of the assistant coaches misses a few games due to being on the road recruiting.

He also might either not be fond of Jewett or might see the writing on the wall there and sees this as a step up to get out before the whole staff is told to leave.

Both of those things are speculation.
