I am not 100% certain of all the places it comes from. I would guess TAF chips in some, assuming that is legal. I know a big chunk of it comes from the baseball camps.

He has an administrative title I believe making a decent salary. Then he makes a chunk by working the camps and other events as you mentioned. I know a “volunteer” coach at another school and that’s how he has it worked out. I assume it’s similar everywhere.

As for Ochinko I haven’t heard anything. Weird how CPM made it clear there were not going to be any changes made, then a month goes by with zero smoke, then this happens. I’m guessing Ochinko decided to move on on his own but who knows.

Sure, but all the arguments for it were about how these guys can’t pay bills. Tim Corbin didn’t call it “dehumanizing” and “sinful” that there’s no 3rd paid assistant because he can’t recruit off campus.

He will make more with the camps than as a Tulane assistant. That may not have been the case 10 years ago when Tulane paid their coaches better. Also, it’s still a stepping stone. He’s in the sec now.

I’ve never heard how much our volunteers for paid but I always assumed it wasn’t much.

Makes a lot more sense if what you said is true

Thought I remember him saying something like “I don’t anticipate any changes right now” and it was basically immediately after we were eliminated. So I doubt he could anticipate the changes at that point.

No, not ALL the arguments. In fact few volunteer coaches at big name programs go unpaid.

My guess is that LSU is probably paying their "volunteer" baseball coaches 10 times more than the average volunteer coach gets paid around college baseball.

Yep.

When I read how he worded it my first thought was “somebody is gone.”

I don’t believe we could make this. Move unless someone was leaving or moving to a non-coaching position. Right?

There’s 2 paid assistants. The others have to be volunteers.

Alan Dunn is on payroll.
Nolan Cain is currently on payroll.

I’d be surprised if a guy like Richard Lipsey couldn’t just hire Nolan Cain as a private contractor for motivation or business relations or some bullshite and throw him 80k.

I try not to read much into what coaches say but he definitely seemed to leave the door open with the way he worded it. I think he probably knew he needed to make a change or changes, but at that point wasn’t sure how he’d go about it

He likely also didn’t want his staff to learn from a press report that he was thinking about making changes in his staff.

Heck of a move to get smith in a volunteer role. I can no longer bash PM for not having a hitting coach, and keeping the good recruiting coordinator no less

More information in the Advocate about Smith’s background....

quote:

Before joining the Tulane staff, Smith was the head coach at Lower Columbia College, a junior college in Longview, Washington. He also has been an assistant at Virginia, Notre Dame and Santa Clara.

Smith has tutored 48 players that were chosen in the Major League Baseball draft. Twenty-three have gone in the first 10 rounds, and he has coached 13 players who have made it to the majors.

At Lower Columbia, Smith compiled a 146-49 record and led the Red Devils to three consecutive West Region titles and Northwest Athletic Conference championships in 2015 and 2017.

He was named the 2015 ABCA/Diamond Pacific Association Division National Coach of the Year after his team finished the season ranked 10th nationally.

In all, 27 of his players received Division I opportunities.

While at Virginia from 2007-11, Smith helped the Cavaliers win three Atlantic Coast Conference titles and went to the College World Series twice in his five seasons there.

Yeah i read that earlier, its a pretty sterling resume. His tulane team definitely was one of the best hitting teams in the country.

Reading some of his virginia amd tulane team stats, he seems to have good slugging teams who score and have good BAs. Not so much on the stealing side. Walks seems to be up and down.

think people on here get caught up a bit too much on the word "volunteer." He's not going to be giving all his time to LSU, while having to pick up shifts at Walk-On's to pay his electricity bill.

I think everybody knows they get paid through TAF and baseball camps but please don’t act like the “volunteer” assistants at LSU are making life changing money. Also those jobs don’t come with any benefits.

The biggest issue is benefits.

This is honestly such a fantastic move. Can’t wait to see the benefits at the plate.

Oh boy,is he afraid to hire outside of his circle?

If you can find someone good within your circle you’d be wise not to go outside of it.
