Go offer Florida’s coach a million per year and just be done with it.

Every coach overcomes hurdles at some point. Every program has crap happen. There are consistent winners. We have played three middle and lower SEC teams, All 4 w different styles. We should be able to match up w at least a couple, we lost all four

He should have been flipping burgers starting with this year. He had 3 years and showed zero ability to make this program worth a damn. We shouldn't even be having that conversation now because he should be gone

Is there any scholarship sport at LSU which would tolerate 2 consecutive losing seasons? How about 4?

the only metrics you need to know...

Johnny Jones was 42-48 vs the SEC
Matt McMahon is 14-44 vs the SEC (0-4 this season)

I get we are missing 2 key pieces this season, but this isn't defensible. Verge will make a change at the end of the season.

That's a good thought, but I just don't see it working considering he's currently making $6.75M per year at Florida.

Verge said he told McMahon before the season that he needed to make the tournament this year, but due to the injury to Thomas, he has modified that stance. He said the following:

“We’ve already had some discussions about what the expectations are,” Ausberry told the Baton Rouge Advocate on Tuesday. “One thing we want to do is make sure we’re in the NCAA Tournament. We made that very clear to Matt at the beginning of the year – that’s where we need to be.”

“I think he wins those first two (SEC) games if he has his point guard,” Ausberry said.

“If something changes, and it it looks better, if the team gives us some hope somewhere, we can look at it,” Ausberry said. “But we’d like to be as close to the NCAA Tournament as possible this year.”

I think this is reasonable, and achievable for CMM, because I think it is unlikely that we'll qualify for the NCAA tournament, and it is the only thing that would keep CMM engaged to keep working to win. If he doesn't make the NCAA tournament, then he may get judged by the NIT tournament. He may have to play and make the NIT final to save his job. If he does make the NCAA tournament, then he will probably need to at least win one game. We'll soon see how much better we'll be with Thomas. If Thomas doesn't make much of a difference, then I don't think we'll even qualify for the NIT, and I think Ausberry will fire him.

That's misleading, because the SEC is orders of magnitude better. You have to evaluate their records against comparable competition, but the SEC of then is not comparable to today's SEC.

Too bad we can't fire the coaches AND the players

We can…that’s what happened to the offensive side of the football team. Since they are now paid, that brings a whole other level of accountability.

Do I think he's a great coach? Hell no, he's dull, lackluster and times, and struggles with the X's and O's of the game.

But do I think he needs to start flipping burgers if we lose on Saturday? Hell no, we lost our best player, which is the reason we are 0-4 in SEC play. The drop-off from DJ to Reece is huge and has showed big time in our 4 SEC games (esp @ A&M). With DJ, we are 3-1 in conference. Let's calm down on the McMahon banter and see if this team looks any different with his guy before we go after his neck.

He's got a $7mm parachute; time to cut him loose for everyone's benefit.

The "what if" game is meaningless at this point. When you're on the hot seat, the only thing that matters is wins and losses; and LSU has yet to win an SEC game.

Remember; LSU lost by double digits AT HOME a week ago vs South Carolina (1-3).

There is a real chance that LSU doesn't win an SEC game this season.

No he shouldn't be flipping burgers. A blowout half against Kentucky at least gets you a promotion to Chick-fil-a drive through attendant. then may have to throw in some rec league Y community service for what we have had to endure.

I do have sympathy for him. He's had some bad breaks. He always loses key players at the worst times imaginable. And he's a good guy, good mentor. He inspires his players. He's by all accounts likeable, friendly, etc.

But it's time.

I agree with OP.

but he still needs to be fired unless he makes the tournament which seems pretty damn unlikely at this point.

although I think with Thomas this team is quite good.

The NIT!

How low are we going to set the bar for "success".? LSU is already the ONLY program in the SEC not to reach the NCAA Tournament in the last three seasons. And two of those programs, Texas and Oklahoma, have only been in the league for 1.5 seasons!

Speaking of Texas, they fired a coach last season who went to the NCAA Tournament three years straight. Including a trip to the Elite Eight. He called the game last night. But here at LSU we have people, in year 4, opining McMahon maybe should be judged by an NIT performance. Did you happen to catch the game the last time LSU was in the NIT? There were probably more people working the game than who actually paid to attend it. No one gives a shite about the NIT. Including coaches who have loftier goals than just "playing hard" and "not quitting". McMahon is not a make-a-wish recipient. He's a well paid professional who just hasn't gotten it done. It happens. It's nothing personal.

This is a lame duck year that was foisted upon the few remaining members of the fan base by a former administration who didn't want to make the LSU job open for their own personal reasons. I sincerely hope McMahon and the players can get some wins. I genuinely do. Losing sucks. I hated to see them lose last night. But it's beyond time to move on.

Debatable. I do not believe LSU gave the financial support a lot of other SEC schools did the last 3 years. And the injuries to Reed last year and Reed and DJ this year are have affected the team. That being said we should have beaten SC and KY at home. No excuses. And possibly TAM on the road. Do I believe we would only have 1 loss if everyone was healthy. Yes. But the fact is he should have beaten SC and KY at home. At some point you have to win the games you have to win. Especially at home. It is time for a change.
