LSUTIGERWIRE - Kirby Smart recalls how his first interview with Nick Saban got entire LSU staff ‘cussed out’

Kriby Smart “I go on the interview, and I’m young and unassuming, and there are all these stories out there that if Miss Terry [Saban’s wife] invites you to the house for dinner, she had to give you the OK. And if you didn’t get the OK, then you weren’t going to get the job.”
Lance Thompson was leaving LSU to take the UCF defensive coordinator’s job. Smart remembers Thompson, who worked under Saban two different times, telling Smart in passing: “Working for Nick is like dog years. Every year feels like seven.”
It was at that point that Smart apparently got too confident and let Thompson’s comment slip.
“I was comfortable and feeling good about the way it was going, and I just say, ‘I don’t get it. People say working here is like dog years.’ I don’t know why in the hell I said that. Just dumb,” Smart said. “Think about it. Why would you ever say something like that to an employer you’re trying to get a job with? But I did. I guess I wasn’t overwhelmed or intimidated. I was too young to know any better.”
The next morning, Smart got a call from Muschamp after that day’s LSU staff meeting. Muschamp told Smart that an irate Saban barked to everybody in the staff room: “Which one of you dumb***** said it’s like dog years working for me? We’re trying to hire the guy, and you tell him that?”
Every year being married to Mrs. Terry probably feels like dog years to Saban.

They were probably right, lol. Saban was a perfectionist, and it’s hard to live up to that….

Nick worked crazy hours and expected the same from his staff. I’m sure not all of them wanted to work that hard. It did however look good to have worked under Nick Saban on your resume!

The stories and references to Nick’s wife are strange.

I have heard his former assistants say that every single play is 4th and 1.

Saban had a GREAT STAFF here, one of the best ever assembled when you look at the coaches and there future successes.

If I remember right, the hours the staff put in was the reason Pete Jenkins retired after a year or two on Nick's staff. He said he told Nick that at his age the hours were just too much.

I’m so glad Kirby was only at LSU one year. If he was here longer he would have made more connections in Louisiana and would frick us like Saban did for 15 years

Seems like a fairly innocuous yet accurate thing for someone to say.

She is one of the reasons he's a great recruiter...she's very involved.
I'm certain she was the main reason he didn't stay in the NFL... she wasn't needed there and didn't like it.

He’s given every sign that he loves her, like you’re supposed to. I don’t know why you made this nasty comment.

Good story. I heard people on his staff have 1 day off. Christmas Eve. That’s it.

You don’t become the greatest coach in history by taking half days on Fridays. Saban was not only the smartest, he worked the hardest too. And as a leader, he expected the same from his coaches and his players. He refined The Process at Bama, but it was clearly evident at LSU as well. Like him or not, you have to respect that he was the greatest

not sure if he still does, but while at LSU, Nick would regularly bring up Mrs Terry to the press.
I don't know if I've ever noticed another coach (in any sport) do that.

Other than Nick’s sweet tooth for Candy.

So 2003 counts for 7 Championships? So we can do Bama math and claim 11 National Titles?
