just got word that Toby Weathersby has been cut from the XFL team that originally drafted him.

I can almost guarantee that if he had stayed his senior year, he would probably still be in the NFL right now. But now it looks as if his football career professionally is over. At least for now. I just hate when juniors leave early when they could really benefit from staying an extra year and also obtaining their degree.

I just wanted to rant sorry.

I think he would’ve benefited from another year and possibly would’ve gone mid round.

I think he would still be on an NFL roster or at least the practice squad. He was in and out of the NFL in a matter of months last year

Some of these kids have certain family and life situations that we can't begin to fathom, let alone understand... they have to do what they think is right ... is it a gamble??... sure... but I will NEVER fault a kid for trying to make his and his family's life better... especially for my own selfish fandom

Could things have been different??
Sure

I wish him the best of luck!

The number of guys who are able to graduate in 4 years isn't that great. And for the ones that do, a Kinesiology or General Studies degree isn't exactly a big difference for the kind of jobs they are going for without the degree.

If they are serious about getting the degree and finishing, one year of undergrad LSU on financial aid isn't going to be a huge burden to pay back

Spot on. I also feel like some college football fans can be selfish/delusional when it comes to these players. The goal from day one is to play in the NFL. Regardless of how many years one spends at the collegiate level, it’s a mere stepping stone for something a lot bigger.

Maybe university pride was a thing of the past, but even with modern day high school and the 24/7 recruiting world, these kids are looking at the NFL as the end game.

What would that last year of LSU done to make the difference though? He wasn't going to get bigger/faster/more athletic. And if it's technique or fundamentals, he undoubtably would have been better coached at the NFL level in OTA and Rookie mini-camp than in college.

I think Malachi should have stayed as well. Needed maturing.

what makes you think he would have suddenly gotton so much better. Even after he left college and had the chance to devote all his time to football he still didn't make it. I'm glad when juniors stay for their senior year because it makes the team better but really doesn't do much for their NFL careers other than delay it.

Blame Les for establishing that culture. Hopefully juniors returning will be a trend with O.

Malachi appeared to catch a lot with his body and needed some serious work. Wish he would've stayed but at this moment, just glad he contributed like he did... while at LSU!

I'm not going to comment on whether individual players made the right or wrong decision to go early. There is no denying though that there was a direct negative correlation between the uptick in early defections we seen in 2012 and beyond and "tDecline".

This is where Orgeron has done the most good. Last year's 3 early draftees was a nice change, but still higher than we seen during most of the 2000s.

Kids leaving to be 1st-3rd round draft picks are smart to leave. If they are a 1, they get a chance for a nice payday in year five, let alone the initial contract. If they are a 2 or a 3, they get to big contract a year earlier.

I can’t fault a young man who makes that decision.
