Les was disgraced with some of the stupid sex allegations against him. He wasn’t exactly discreet about some of the stuff with the blonds and the big boobs. I guess he thought he was untouchable?

What was the talent level at USC coming in to this year? Is it really his fault at this point, probably needs more NIL money and some time to recruit.

It’s so hard to figure.
Nothing about the guy seemed particularly gifted, or particularly knowledgeable or anything but he somehow got it done.

USCe lost 28-2 to Auburn in baseball. Same score we lost to Bama in '97.

Well LSU got swept at Auburn. USC has only lost one there so far, albeit in monumentally embarrassing fashion.

Which former LSU head coach left and ended up embarrassing himself the most?

I don’t think there is any doubt it is Paul Dietzel.

It's early to say it's Paul Mainieri, who inspired the OP. But it is ironic that Paul Dietzel also went to South Carolina and stunk it up.

Other Candidates are:

Gerry Dinardo, who went 8-27 @ Indiana in 3 seasons after taking over for Cam Cameron

Trent Johnson seems to be getting worse with every stop.

Press Maravich wasn't good at LSU, but he was horrendous at App State going 12-51 over 2 1/2 seasons.

He will "retire" again for a negotiated sum. I hope they dont bring him back to lsu to be around this program in any way shape or form.

He didn’t really recruit much at LSU towards the end by all accounts, so I doubt that’ll help.

Yep - when he left I was really devastated - loved that man - primarily for the success of his "Chinese Bandit" intiative

BUT - I accepted that he went to Army because it was his 'lifelong dream' position.

THEN - a couple of years later his 'dream' became situated in South Carolina and then even a rube from Vernon Parish could see thru that excuse.

One of my first experiences in being very disappointed in another's actions - vowed to not put that kind of emotional investment in tangential characters ever again. Nixon and 'dubya' Bush have come closest to that disappointment later on.

This goes beyond talent, which they have more of than Mizzou. If they were losing a lot of non-run rule games where they were competing as hard as they can, it would be one thing. But everyone sees what’s happening there. That team has QUIT on Paul. That’s the problem.

My only fear is LSU will struggle to sweep USCe.

Anything official on Petry? Is he out for the year? Hopefully his college career is over with.

Not a series next weekend we need to run up our pitch counts

Always wondered where LSU would be if he had stuck around.

Dietzel, Arnsbarger, and Saban were all hard to watch walk away. I wish LSU had gotten serious about the program earlier rather than allowing ourselves to be a stepping stone.

paul was never a good coach, he had good assistants and great players and the LSU brand to recruit to... he will fail at SC just like Miles failed at Kansas, they weren't good coaches... it shows anyone can win at LSU..

Yeah, but Paul isn't getting his team to Omaha nor pounding Bama in the CWS championship game like LSU did. I still remember Bama's CF, that guy was a hell of an all around player.

Their late-career decisions and struggles are similar, they joined LSU around the same time and each won a title in their third years, but Les Miles and Paul Mainieri came to their respective teams in entirely different circumstances. Les took over from Nick Saban, two years removed from a national title and loaded with talent. Mainieri took over from Smoke Laval, with a program seven years removed from a national title and languishing under an ill-equipped successor.

Beyond that, Les Miles showed a little bit of promise at Oklahoma St with some upset victories over OU, but they were never really in contention for a BCS or Big 12 title. Mainieri had taken Notre Dame to the CWS prior to taking the LSU job.

Only someone who upvotes themselves would blame someone else of doing it. I’ll add a second one to prove it wasn’t me though if you’re that worked up over it.
