I haven't kept up with LA HS football...how was Johnson as a passer

I know that Johnson is the all time offense leader in LA HS football. What I don't know is what kind of a passer was he? I realize he doesn't have college experience at QB, but then again, Van Buren has quite a bit experience as QB in the SEC (Miss State of course) and we know how that panned out. My brother wants Johnson to get a shot at QB because how could be worse that Van Buren who couldn't find an open receiver with binoculars and a compass...he missed seeing them ALL NIGHT LONG!

I only saw him play once vs STM in the Dome. More of a running qb from what I remember.

He did throw for over 10k yds & 117 TD's in HS.

I watched almost every one of his games. My son went to LCA and played for Coach Faulk before JuJuan was there. He and I still follow them and watch most of their games even now.
He was decent but not great as a passer. He had a habit of pressing and making mistakes when he felt like he needed to make something happen. He does have a strong arm and can throw a pretty pass, but is not highly accurate.
Like a lot of HS QBs, he would often look down receivers, but he played with enough talented guys that it rarely cost him.
He may have the raw material to be a pretty good college QB, but I think it would take a minute. However, he is a hard worker and generally a good kid, so maybe he could get there faster than I would expect.
I know Clean saw him play a bit too, he could probably give you a more professional opinion if he sees this.

JuJuan WAS the all time career TD record holder when he finished, but that record was broken during the 2024 season by Jonathan Dartez of Vermilion Catholic. Dartez plays for Nicholls.

Sounds like good analysis to me. Strong arm is good and staring at receivers as you said is pretty standard for HS QBs. However, he would have to improve his accuracy and the panic factor is one issue that Van Buren still has. He definitely showed "happy feet" as even the announcers kept talking about it.

Yes HS. I was responding to a post that he was primarily a runner. He did throw the ball quite a bit. I watched a few games in person and he got a ton of yds throwing off of scrambles. I wouldn't say he was a pass first guy but he can throw it.

To be fair, finding shite with a pair of binoculars and a compass can be hard

Hmmmmm….
This can’t be right.
I don’t see my name anywhere on that list.

Dunham QB gonna set virtually every record out there.

Saw him several times in HS, wins and losses.
Johnson wasn’t a passer. He was a thrower. He throws well. He’s not a guy who read defenses and knew who would be open, he was a guy who scrambled till his receivers got open and sometimes found them wide open down field or ran toward the line of scrimmage and as he would run, threw to a guy who had just blocked, then released.
Athletic ability overall was off the charts as you would expect.
As noted by others, when pressed he made a lot of bad throws. He was recruited to LSU and most other places as defensive secondary. That should tell us how his QB game was evaluated for the next level.

Having a solid arm and a receiver or 2 over the years is all a HS QB needs. DB’s aren’t playing a lot of man, so all he’s gotta do is hit a dude in space and you can have a lot of success in HS.
College, absolutely not the case.
If he’s been in the QB room all season, and he’s shown that he can read defenses pre and post snap, maybe he deserves a look, but if he’s been in the RB group all season, there’s absolutely no need to have him at QB

Thank you for your good evaluation. Yeah, I did know that the recruiting services had him listed as a CB so that indeed is never a good sign that he is really QB caliber.
I haven't been to many HS games. Having said that, out of the few dozen QBs I have seen in person, Zach Lee at McKinney north of Dallas was an amazing QB. He was a thrower (good fastball in baseball), was a great passer and threw an easy to catch ball, scanned the field well, was very mobile, could run (not Marcel Reed by any stretch),looked off his target receiver, and I believe was valedictorian/very intelligent and had good football instincts. If he had not opted for the LA Dodgers, the Les Miles saga for those years would have been far, far different. He should have rated a 5* and was rated maybe a low 4*.

Jamaican Dartez sounds like a black fella. Jonathan, while a freak of nature, is white.
If Jamaican is white I appologise.
