How do you feel about passing up Field Goals

Lane is known for following analytics excessively for in game decisions such as kicking a field goal or going for it on 4th. Goes for it on 4th at a high rate. I’m curious about what the rant thinks about this.
I tend to be old school in the sense that I think you should almost always kick in the first half (exception being when you are within the 5 yard line). You never know how valuable those free points maybe later in the game. Second half- going for it doesn’t bother me as much.
Two years ago, Lane and the Rebels lost to Florida. They had 4 possessions in the red zone where they chose not to kick. It was the difference in the game. If Lane loses some games for us in a similar manner, I could see some criticism from the fan base.

I don't mind being aggressive when you have competent play calling

We've been preconditioned already with BK's knack for going for it on 4th down on the 1st stalled drive of each game.

Has he done anything like that since?

Detroit Lions also. As long as it’s consistent and backed by statistics, I’m good with it. Inconsistency and a string of poor outcomes, would bring criticism.
Heck - The Mad Hatter got extremely lucky early at LSU and then became ultra predictable.

Analytics should be used as a tool to make a decision, not the decision-maker.

I wouldn't exactly call them "free points". There is a lot of moving parts to a field goal: 1) snap to the holder 2) catch the snap, place ball on tee/ground 3) kicker advances to kick the ball, plant foot secure, timing perfect.
Angles always different, closer in angle more extreme & uprights narrower...

Lane tends to use it as a decision maker. He is pretty extreme when it comes to using analytics to make decisions
Be prepared

FGs should be reduced to only being worth 1 point if 40+ yards (encourage more teams to go for it, reward the offense for moving the ball further downfield) and punts should be banned entirely. Also please remove unnecessary roughness while we're at it

Well it all depends. I don't mind being aggressive BUT at the same time, Lane has lost big games early by not taking points or by being overly agressive. We have Lane so I am ok living and dying by his agressiveness but its gonna suck when/if it costs us ina big game.
When we had BK, I loathed that we never took FGs in opening games. It cost us multiple wins. Lane is not BK though.

Seems like coaches get criticized for “settling” for field goals too.
If you win it’s brilliant if you don’t you’re fired. The life of a coach.

Brian Kelly definitely left critical points off the board by eschewing FGs and then getting stuffed on fourth downs near the goalline! But that was different -- we didn't have a mobil QB in Nussmeier, and the O line was bad. He should've kicked in those situations.

When you have a lethal offense it's usually very advantageous to go for it typically in 4th/3 or less situations as analytics will show you.
There's a bunch of variables around that though. If you're up 10 with 4 minutes to go in game and you're 4th/2 on your own 28 yard line - I highly doubt Lane would be going for that. Make the team drive the field twice if they want to tie/win the game, dont give them a potential short field in a 2 score game with 4 minutes to go.
It's all very situational. Lane isnt an idiot, but he is aggressive and knows the stats when you have a good offense favors the offense often in 4th/short situations

At Ole Miss he had nothing to lose. No expectations. At LSU he will still go for it on 4th but not nearly as much. He will take the points depending on the situation more frequently.

There is no standard approach. It depends on so many variables and that's where a coach's feel for the game and feel for his personnel trumps analytics.
Perhaps I'm missing something, but the stat sheet reflects on two such occasions. The first was in the 1st quarter of a 0-0 game. It was a 4th & 1 at the UF 11 yard line. OM tried a wildcat play with a DT carrying the ball. I don't mind the decision to go for it in that scenario. I just hate the playcall in giving it to a guy who (a) the entire defense knows is getting the ball before the snap and (b) is not someone who routinely carries the ball.
The second occasion was with a little less than 6:00 to go in the 3rd with OM down 17-14. It was 4th & 1 from essentially the same yard line. Even with hindsight being 20/20, I still would have kicked it there. You are deeper in the game at that point and the gameflow clearly shows it's going to be a tight battle. What made it worse was OM basically ran the same play Florida stoned on the first 4th down attempt (and on a previous 3rd down try that OM ultimately converted on 4th down)

as long as it's not a play coming that i can predict like we we just saw for 4y.

quote:Sure, there’s obviously some risk in doing this. I think he wins that game 2 years ago against LSU in Death Valley if he settled for field goals as well.

How many games has he won because he was aggressive over settling for field goals? It really depends on the down/distance, point in the game, score, flow of the game, how much smack talk the other team does on twitter, etc.

I’m fine with it as long as he has 100% success. But the first time he misses I’ll say he’s a hack that should know better, should be on the next bus out of Baton Rouge, and that I can coach this team better than him.

its vegas, its gambling. If you pass on a field goal and dont get the TD, you are inclined to double down later in the game to recoup the lost points. Thats what happened against Florida. I think analytics are good in some instances but analytics dont have "game feel". I am of the school of thought that road/home, environment and momentum are things that need to factor into the equation. Sometimes taking the points is the smart move, not necessarily the one you want to make. You have to be able to be in the moment

I couldn’t care less. I’d rather lose a game being aggressive rather than being conservative which we were used to for decades.
I’m excited to see us have an excellent play caller and aggressive approach to the 4th downs.
