It’s actually not his fault though he should’ve blocked SOMEBODY. The timing was off. The CENTER was supposed to step up and put a body on the safety that crashed down leaving the LB to Berry but the play developed faster than Moore could move so his guy went unblocked. Berry probably should’ve taken the guy Moore missed but to take neither is unacceptable. Even if Leavitt couldn’t get away, the convo would be about the play moving too fast or Moore moving way too slow but look at Berry engage! Instead it LOOKS like Berry ruined the play. If he’d taken the man he was supposed to take, the safety blows up the play and folks are probably saying Berry blocked the wrong guy. Whole thing was fricked as soon as Moore couldn’t reach his guy.

They probably needed to check out of that play when the safety came down because he’d be too fast for Moore anyway. That design asks a lot of Moore and he’s capable but not at that speed. It’s on him and Leavitt to see that.

Harlem seems to be giving more effort , Caden is just collecting a check and waiting for next portal .

Berry might would be better utilized in a Josh Reed fashion .

Running the ball is not the only responsibility of a running back. Berry and Durham are very good at the running the ball part…and need to improve upon the rest.

Josh Williams was unheralded recruit who got lots of touches for this very reason.

I won't be that cynical but you have to be VERY careful with those Duncanville HS guys. The program has been so dominant that many of the star players only play one half of each game. That is because they are so far ahead they aren't needed for the 2nd half. I believe part of Durham's problem with reading the LOS to find a hole/crease is he never had to do that at Duncanville. The hole was exactly where it was supposed to be and he just ran through it. I understand that part about his game. What I don't understand is how a member of the state championship relay team gets caught from behind so much. Maybe that is a sign of his frequent foot issue because no way should ANYONE catch that guy from behind and it happened a lot in previous years.

You gotta be able to block in this system man. Just what it is.

From what Ive been told, its their lack of ability to pass block that is hindering playing time.

Berry has some issues with not seeing open running lanes also

Kiffin made it very clear the things he values most in a RB and that's yards after contact and pass blocking. Berry doesn't do ether well at the moment. Berry is very small and lacks physicality and gets knocked down at first contact and can't pass block. Berry is gifted at pass catching and running and is shifty but the traits Kiffin emphasizes are the most important for a back imo. Berry should get more touches against McNeese and can make his way into more playing time. Lots of teams blitz Leavitt and if Berry was our featured back Leavitt may be out for the year by now.

Berry has been elevated to number 2 but the answer to your question is blocking ability.
Berry’s grade as a blocker and pass protector is atrocious.

I think it has more to do with his football IQ and blocking ability than just running ability....even though he is our best RB. Berry will get some chances this week and if he shows out, he may be getting more reps. Not sure about Durham, other than he lost a step either from injury or too much weight. I am afraid he has lost his SEC level ability.

This is really interesting and I wonder if it's a common problem with some of the really highly rated recruits, the idea that their teams in HS are so dominant they actually miss out on rounding out their skill sets and are forced to acquire them in a much more difficult environment.

I'm sure it happens. But I think Durham's issues tie back to injury and lack of development, not high school competition.

Harley Berry is young and Caden Durham lacks vision and isn’t a very good blocker. Also lacks toughness. That’s just my take. I’m not a coach..

there is a lot more to playing the running back position than taking a handoff
that said, please enroll in a remedial English course…

Berry is the most naturally gifted running back

Based on what? His star ranking? He is an average back, more of a scat back

Caden goes down as soon as you touch him. He was part of the 2025 rushing problem. He has good speed and some moves but isn’t great running between the tackles.
Unsure about his pass protection ability i think he was more of a safety valve than a blocker.
With the backs we have committed there is zero chance he returns next year.

A running back does more than just run the ball. Dillon is the best blocking back we have, therefore, he gets the start. It's that simple.
