How was that taking shots at Kiffin? Stop looking for bulletin board material in everything.

Jon while at Ky, Linebacker Jon Sumrall had to give up playing football because of a medical condition, Coach Rich Brooks announced after Fridays practice at Commonwealth Stadium.
Sumrall has been diagnosed with cervical spinal stenosis, a condition which makes him more susceptible to neck injuries. He has had pinched nerves in his neck and shoulder, known commonly as a stinger, which prompted the evaluation.

He did an amazing job at Tulane. Completely took the entire program to another level, even after Willie Fritz set the bar high.
Every one of his players would run through a wall for him.
I think he has potential to be great, really soon. Hate that Florida got him.

Yup, sorry Tulane

Oh gimme a break, you're really gonna stay at Tulane over a job like Florida? Kick rocks

Tulane was 12-2 (2022) and 11-2 (2023) in Fritz's final two seasons. If the 12 team CFP format would have existed in 2022 Tulane would have made the CFP. They would have been in position to do so again in 2023 heading into the AAC championship game.
Sumrall went 9-5 in his first season at Tulane (2024). And that was in a slightly weaker AAC because 2023 champ, SMU, had moved to the ACC (where they won the league that season).
At best, in 2025 Sumrall got Tulane back to where Fritz let it. He didn't "elevate" anything. In fact, you could argue just the opposite. Sumrall only had 1 win over a power conf. opponent (5 loss, unranked, Duke, at home) in his two seasons at Tulane. Fritz had two such wins in 2022 alone (@ Big 12 champ K-State and top 10 USC in the Cotton Bowl)

Coaching the playoffs as the head coach of Tulane while going to Florida is worlds different than coaching Ole Miss while going to LSU.
Just saying

It's foolish for any coach to run their mouth when they haven't coached a game at their new school.

This dude seems unhinged. Wait till UF spirals. The pressers will be quite a show.

Means very little in today's pro-college environment. Shane Beamer's players love him too.

If anyone needed more reassurance about Sumrall
This is a hire I did not understand. He took over a Tulane program that the previous coach had cooking, and he didn’t stay long enough to see how it would go. Who knows if he’s a good coach?
LSU hired Archer after Arnsparger, and Archer went 10-1-1 the next year. That’s basically the resume Florida hired. Then Archer nosedived.
It kind of has the feel of the Houston coaches that the Texas schools were hiring, Sumlin and I forget the other guy. They all sucked, but Houston was well-funded so they were outclassing their shitty competition.

Sumrall being a dumbass
talking tough all off season
leaving Ole Miss for LSU is NOT the same as leaving Tulane for UF
this is about rivarly and pride of school
And Tulane didn't deserve to be in the playoffs
- so there is that

IMO it made much more sense for UF to expect him to leave Tulane before the playoffs. Tulane had 0 chance of winning the NC. UF needed him in Gainesville to recruit, portal, etc. It worked out especially since Tulane was booted from the playoffs early enough before the portal opened.
I understand why OM didn’t. I think Sumrall making the comparison to Kiffin’s situation is apples to oranges, in line with your comments.
Posted on 7/23/26 at 5:52 pm to cajuntiger1010
This guy was at little brother Tulane being taught to hate LSU then Kiffin teams kicked his arse twice last season. Then he was clearly Florida’s second choice after Kiffin turned down Florida.
Yep I’d hate LSU and Kiffin too

I didn’t take that as a negative comment toward Kiffin. I thought Summeral was pretty friendly in that regard. So was Golding except when he was talking about re recruiting his QB and said Ole Miss fans wouldn’t piss on Kiffin if he were on fire.
The one who took a shot at Kiffin was the Tennessee coach. But it was all good natured

I think Sumrall’s gonna be pretty good. Not sure he’ll have the resources necessary to compete at the highest level, but I think he’s a pretty dang good coach.

Exactly. How could Sumrall have gotten this so wrong?

Florida has possibly
Become the worst job in the sec. We have lsu/uga/bama expectations with Miss state resources and support.
