I also understand you want to get northern teams down here in February and early March. But it seems like in recent years we have been scheduling schools I did not even know were schools/never heard of.

The SEC has been one of the top baseball conferences for a while now, but it is more of a meat grinder than ever before today. There used to be a few conference series where we could expect to sweep just by showing up in the past, but that’s not the case anymore. There’s only one program that truly doesn’t care about the sport now (Mizzou). USC and may be struggling, but their admin and fans definitely want to get back to the top half of the conference. Everyone else has made investments and are making postseason play.

I get the desire to have a few strong non-conference games, but it’s smarter to get to know the entire roster early without tons of pressure so everything is set for the beginning of SEC play. We have all the SoS we can stand playing in this league.

Why not just play the Univ of Wisconsin

Hell of an idea.

Except for the part about them not having a team...

Respect your opinion, but it is not upon us to prop-up the other state schools. Regarding the shared metro angle, we don't have to take our cues from other schools? Whether they do or don't, we need to do what benefits us the most. Just my view.

We play the in state schools because they’re cheap. Minimal expense to buy LaTech vs. GaSouthern.

Maine reached the College World Series five times during the 1980s, so I don't know if that is the best example you could use.

It’s sort of a pre-season but it counts. I’m not questioning though, it works.

It's a very narrow view.

If we were really serious about increasing SoS we’d schedule Little Rock

Avoid losing games prior to SEC play. Just like basketball.

It actually has nothing to do with that. It's almost entirely financial.

Road travel (especially beyond the Gulf South) gets costly. In college baseball, no team is paying LSU to travel to their site for a pre-conference series. So LSU is footing the bill for the trip which is air charter, 3 - 4 hotel nights, buses, meals, per-diem, etc.

On top of that, LSU is losing at least 3, likely 4, home games. That's easily $300-500k in ticket & parking revenue, not counting ancillary revenue from concessions, merch sales, etc.

This is all for a sport that is essentially revenue-neutral.

The above isn't even factoring that your opponents are limited because most teams from the northeast and midwest are on the road for February & March when you're trying to schedule these games.

I think Jay has it figured out pretty well at this point.

"Jay has figured it out". He has said he meets regularly with Skip & Skip promoted this way of scheduling way back then; i.e. helping the in-state teams. That's one HOF coach's view & CJJ should end up in the same HOF down the road. Trust their view.

There’s no reason to schedule big name teams non-conference. The ONLY thing I can think of is $$$ and fans. Money doesn’t really work, because you’ll have a return trip. I do think the fans want to see a slate with more “name” programs, but that’s what these college classics are for. They have taken over the early weekends. Hell, in Texas alone you can play one of these 4-6 team classics in Houston, Round Rock, Frisco, Arlington, San Antonio, and even Corpus Christi. Those are awesome for fans, as you get to see more teams and games. It’s the new way.

I believe most Tiger fans say that winning two of the last three national titles is plenty good proof Jay knows what he’s doing. And Coach Mulkey knows what she’s doing as well, given her track record.

I like your point about how the football team should consider not playing such a tough opponent in the season opener. That hasn’t worked in recent years. It should be something Kiffin looks at very closely.

Our early season non-conference schedule is similar to Arkansas'

Shriners Children’s College Showdown (TCU/OK State/Tx Tech)
Tarleton State
Xavier x3
Arkansas State x2
UT Arlington x3
Oral Roberts
Stetson x4
N Colorado x2
