Al Woods is an enigma. He was a 5-star recruit that sat the bench at LSU, and didn’t play well when he was in the game. Then did fine as a senior starter.
Then the Saints, who never take LSU players, draft him in the 4th round.
You would think that is where his NFL success story would begin? Nope, Saints cut him.
Then he jumps from team to team for 12 years making every roster and playing well.

He also jumped offsides and gave the Saints a key first down.

Al got cut from the Saints because he reported in grossly out of shape.

Hunter just wasn’t coached up with any pass rushing moves at LSU but he was very productive. 73 tackles for a DE is a lot plus he had 13 TFLs, returned a fumble he caused for a TD and batted down 6 passes at the line his last season here.

Al woods blocked my shot while going up for a layup in HS. He threw it to the top row of the bleachers... my pride went along with the ball for the 60+ feet ride..

A lot wrong with this take.
Al’s biggest issue his first few years was that he was a 6’4 320 quick nose type DT in a defense that featured 6’1 300 penetrating quick DTs (see Kyle Williams, Wroten, Dorsey). He still was in the 2 deep and played well when in.
He started all 13 games as a senior in 09 and put up good numbers for his role.

I played against him in high school. He was in our district. Dude was a monster.

Rahim Alem?
Part time punter at LSU?
Part time punter at LSU?

You are correct. He was a run stuffing nose guard playing out of position in college. Couldn't change the whole defense just to fit him. May have had a more impact at a different program.

quote:Thank you John Chavis. He had Hunter play as the edge-setting DE instead of rushing the passer. Of course, Hunter gets let loose in the pros and turns into one of the best pass rushers in the NFL.
Danielle Hunter is the one that I don't understand....He's a damn all pro and was one of the least productive DE we have had past 10 years...

He wasn't coached up at LSU. He played too upright at the college level. He also was a real nice guy, no mean streak. More power to him in the NFL, go Al.

I would not list Hunter as an underachiever while at LSU.
He is simply another in a fairly long list of players, Patrick Queen the latest, that showed up here undersized and it just took several years to get big and strong enough to not get pushed around and be able to excel at their position.

Sometimes with big dudes like that, it takes a while for their athleticism to catch up to their bodies. Perhaps where they always overwhelmed with brute strength, they needed to figure out how to add technique and finesse as well.

He also had a game changing penalty tonight.
Saints still only got a FG. If anything, it took time off the clock but they had a long 4th down and TOD'd so not really.

Anyone else shocked by how long Al Woods has lasted in the NFL?
When he got his encroachment penalty I said " Is that AL WOODS!?!" to my friend. Didn't think he was still playing.

Nah. If anything, it was a positive for the Seahawks that more time was run off with still just a FG as the result
Please explain to the class how having less time to make up the deficit was a positive for the seahawks...

quote:My biggest pet peeve in football is scoring too early. And they only needed a FG to tie. With still 2 minutes left to work with, there is no argument at all that the Seahawks were short time. With 3:30 left, it's easy to imagine a scenario where a couple of big plays put them in scoring position too early.
