alleva is in the soup. he is already disliked by a bunch of people and this hire (whoever it is) will piss off another group of LSU sports supporters.

LSU basketball is, at best, Kentucky football.

Thanks for that post. I'd say you have this coaching hire summed up perfectly at this point in the process.

That needs a sticky.

With a great coach, and possibly a surprise recruit or 2, along with our returning players, we can still be good next year.

So....your saying there is still a chance.

Good post. I hope you're right.

I agree with the denying of meetings. Alleva very well could have met with Dixon's agent. No need to meet with Dixon right now.

IMO, Alleva will make a decent hire. Whether fair or not, Alleva has always been looked at as an "outsider" and is constantly having to prove himself to the fanbase even though he is presiding over an LSU athletic department that is more financially stable and nationally recognized than ever in its history. Alleva is not going to "tie his own fate" to a basketball coach, which is what he would be doing by hiring Jones. If he goes out and makes a good hire, just as he did with Trent, Alleva's fate won't be tied to the coach. In other words, if Jones fails at LSU, it will all fall on Alleva...if someone like Dixon or Pastner or Drew fails at LSU, everyone will realize that it was a good hire that just didn't work out (much like Trent).

He will make a splash with this hire, just as he did with his other two big hires (Johnson and Caldwell).

At this point, my guess is that it will be Dixon or Pastner. If not one of those two, I fully expect the hire will be someone that hasn't even been discussed.

If, for some reason it does end up being Jones, rest assured that LSU was turned down by every single target out there. but it won't be from lack of trying to lure a homerun hire to Baton Rouge.

Really? How many SEC football titles has Kentucky won compared to LSU's 10 SEC titles in basketball? Has Kentucky football produced three of the top 50 NFL players of all time? Has Kentucky football made the post-season for 10 consecutive seasons? Historically speaking, the LSU basketball program is top 4 in the SEC. Kentucky along with Vandy arguably have the worst football programs in the SEC from a historical standpoint. Get out of here with your weak bullshite, you obviously don't have a clue.

Football Florida hired a good basketball coach and look what happened for them.

Exactly! A nationally prominent university with a top tier athletic program like LSU's should be able to attract, pay, and support a top tier coach.

You are missing the point. Billy Donovan was no where near the stature of a coach before going to Florida that he is today.

I'm not saying Jones is the answer here, but all great coaches had to get their first big shot somewhere. We don't really know how good Johnny Jones is yet.

I don't think we can get dixon. no way. we won't get a big name coach to take this job. it JJ or any up and comer. any up and comer is in for deep shite because it will take a minor micracle for the next coach to turn program around in less than 4 years. les miles took a ton of bs from fan base when he was winning 10 games a year. I know this isn't football, but any up and coming better have real thick skin cause fanbase will be all over him.

I disagree on many points...

#1 It doesn't take 4 years to turn a basketball program around. It takes 2 recruits, and sometimes even 1 might do the trick. That can be accomplished in two years if not overnight.

#2 There isn't a lot of pressure to win at LSU right now. Whoever is chosen, there won't be much pressure until Years 3-4. There will actually be more pressure on a "big name" coach than there would be on someone like Jones. If we hire Jones, most people will expect us to continue sucking, wheras if we hire a big name, people will no longer ignore LSU basketball and will expect things to turn around quickly and thus fans will have a shorter fuse.

Fans only show up if the team is really, really good which is a rarity in the past 20 years. Not a bad comparison.
