LSU athletic director Joe Alleva on Wednesday night confirmed that he interviewed North Texas coach and former LSU player and assistant Johnny Jones on Tuesday.

Alleva also disputed reports that say he has spoken to Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon about the LSU vacancy.

Alleva went on to say that Harvard coach Tommy Amaker, who was a player and assistant coach at Duke when Alleva worked there, is not interested in succeeding Trent Johnson at LSU.

Alleva called Jones “a great candidate and a great interview,” but denied internet reports that said he spoke to Dixon in Atlanta on Wednesday. A reporter covering Pittsburgh basketball for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette tweeted that Dixon declined comment on the LSU job and was attending a Pittsburgh Penguins hockey game Wednesday night.

Alleva called Amaker a friend and said he spoke to him three times, but “He’s happy where he’s at.”

He makes it sounds like we are far away from a real candidate. Almost as if JJ is a last option hire. Hopefully this plays out well and we get a hire before the weekend.

Damn is Jones basically the only guy we've gone after?

If he wasn't Dale's BBQ buddy we wouldn't even think twice about him. There's no reason to settle for Johnny Jones.

Still makes me wonder why Dixon would decline to comment. If its not Jamie Dixon that's fine but we should definitely keep looking past jones

As I posted in another thread. Jones will get a 700k plus pay raise because he has LA ties. Nothing more.

Well this is disappointing. 5 hours ago I'm thinking JA's in Atl working out a deal with Dixon. Now, we're right back to Jones.

Lot of misinformation, he may have very well have been there. Nobody seems to know and everyone's sources are total shite at this point.

He didn't say he wasn't meeting with Pastner in Atlanta though.

That's what I'm thinking, why not deny it all together. No comment is like pleading the fifth.

Frank Martin, on national television, denied he had even talked to South Carolina the day before he was hired.

This was after days of speculation.

I don't believe anyone during a coaching search.

He is pinged by colleges, who are looking for coaches, every year. Supposedly this is why he doesn't comment.
