Can we talk about pre-workout and even protein powder on this board?

Fellas, most of you are in your mid 30s or mid 40s, you don't need pre-workout to go to anytime fitness to lift for 45 minutes 4 days a week. And you likely don't need protein powder, just eat some meat and you will easily hit your needed protein goals.

Drink a cup of coffee or if it's after noon, better yet, don't. Sufficient sleep is the best performance enhancer in the game.

I personally don’t disagree about the pre-workout. Some people like the feeling and that’s alright. I’ll take it every now and then.

I do typically need the protein supplements when I’m only having 2 meals per day.

But I get what you’re saying more of a want, not need in most cases.

Kinda sounds like you're tell people to what they should or shouldn't take... or rather what they should or shouldn't do.

But to each his own.

Do whatever you want, but you are wasting your money and in the case of pre-workout, nesting the biggest benefit to your body you can do, which is sleep.

To get caffeine to do 4x5 of bench press. I'm not trying to be a dick, a lot of people just don't know. They see shiny Instagram ads how this pre gets you shredded and take 300mg of caffeine at 5:30pm

I agree, mostly. People don't need a preworkout every time they go into the gym. Ideally they would save them for a harder workout.

Now with that said, I enjoy taking them. I like to see how the different combinations of ingredients affect how I feel and perform. I like to listen to why the person who formulated the preworkout/supplement, put the things in that they did.

I'm actually surprised that so many people that are into fitness, don't really know what they are taking and what each ingredient is supposed to be doing. For anyone interested here is a good podcast to get you started Supplement engineer

If you are doing intermittent fasting, you most likely need to supplement with whey protein.

I used preworkout until about a year ago. I stopped after my gym hiatus when I had covid.

What I realized when I went back to the gym was that the preworkout did nothing for me as far as more energy or "focus" it was simply part of the routine.

I’ve been taking a Preworkout for about a decade, on average 1-2x/week for the longer weights sessions.

It usually gives me that extra energy for yard work or other house chores after the gym.

I always take early enough in day to avoid sleep problems. While I’ve never been out of shape as an adult, I think the Preworkout has been one factor of feeling in better overall shape than younger days.

pretty much

Big Ole Baw, i agree that none of that is needed and I work out at night, so i dont use a preworkout, especially one with caffiene

but are you going to just ignore the benifits of the creatine and Beta Alinine in a PWO? because they both show tremendous performance, hypertrophy and significant cognitive benifits.

also most people dont get nearly enough protein, alteast talking average american. Protein powders are also a game changer when it comes to gaining muscle.

and no offense but you weigh like 150....i dont feel like you are in any position to start telling others, who carry more lean tissue then you weigh @ the same height, what to do or how to do things.

that would be like me telling a physique contestant that weighs 205 how to get lean. or telling a powerlifter with a 1500 total at 200 lbs how to get strong.......doesnt make a lot of sense to me.

plus dont you do crossfit?

I've done pre-workout plenty over the years, but more off and on. For me, it helps at times just to give a kick to get going. Why... because I'm usually up at 0400-0415 and at the gym by 0500. Then on the road to work, 1hr 45min drive, and not leaving work till 5pm.

But i get what you're saying... but my point was, if you want to talk about your subject then offer advise and options. Don't come across as telling people why to take or don't take. Peace!

I work out at 4 am so the pre workout gives me an extra boost. Also I enjoy the muscle pumps that come with it. For those that say pre workout does nothing for them I would question the pre they’re taking.

As far as protein powder, of course you can get enough protein from meat, but a good tasting protein shake (and not all of them are) can break of the monotony and be a bit a treat. But to each his own

I go to the gym very early. I want to take a little pre to the mouth and wash it down with water. I'm not sipping on some hot arse coffee to get 50mg of caffeine. I've also tried cold brew, but that wasn't any better.

Sleep is a great thing, but not everyone is on the same schedule or has the same things going on.

Preworkout is safe if you're not a jackass. Don't buy things with proprietary blends where you don't even know what you're taking. Also, don't go over 1 scoop, then you're playing with fire.

I've been taking a preworkout for years. I look for the BCAAs and creatine, as well as the amount of caffeine included in it. I rather have it all in one scoop of preworkout instead of having to buy a jug of each.

Do I think preworkout is going to add 100lbs to my bench and give me a sick 8 pack abs? No, because I'm not an idiot. But the science behind BCAAs and creatine are there, and if my preworkout wants to throw some other shite in as well, then lets frickin go!

And when I was counting calories strictly, it was tough for me to hit my protein goals some days without a protein shake. Did I need it to hit the numbers every day? No. But it sure helps some of those days.

Everyone's body types and life styles are different, and for you to say what anyone else should or shouldn't be doing for their own fitness goals is asinine.

I have 3 kids under 6 and coffee makes me want to shite. I journal my workouts with every supplement I introduce or take away, so I have a good idea of what works and what does not for me. I use a caffeinated PWO 3 days a week and a stimulant free PWO 3 days a week. I also IF and lift midday then go back to the office, so hitting 200g of protein in a 6 hour window is not super easy for me without protein powder.

Eating 5 or so chicken breasts in 5 hours sucks.

It’s dumb to lump preworkout all in one category. The key is to identify the ingredients you need and work with those. The ones I look for are caffeine (if needed), beta alanine, and creatine. All of those things with sleep and good diet/protein consumption can add value to your workouts on a daily basis. Good quality protein powder is a key for most people too since most people under eat protein.

I work from 4am til about 230 in the afternoon. Typically wake up around 330am. Often times I feel like a damn zombie when I pull up to the house after work. I need a heavy dose of caffeine to get me in the mood. I can do it without but it certainly helps. Coffee just isn’t enough.
