and not changing your diet that much.

It'd have to be a lot of Coke. It's usually from bloat or people seriously over doing it.

Depends on how much coke. I’m for people doing as they please but to drink a lot of regular soda is just asking to be a fatty.

My cousin swears he dropped 40 pounds by just quitting soda. He was apparently drinking 6-8 Cokes a day... So 840-1120 calories a day. It certainly seems possible.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if people do.
I'm thin and at least aerobically conditioned, can go into nutritional ketosis very easily, etc. Point being, I have an automatic (1 week) 5lb drop (even accounting for water weight) when I totally cut beer. I've replicated it enough to be very confident in this.
So, a 20lb swing for the average soda-drinker going cold turkey would be totally expected.
The only time in my life when I've been pretty seriously overweight was when I hit 30 years old and my office was right next to the kitchen with a fountain drink machine, donuts, and all that shite. but really it was just bored trips to grab a coke that landed me at 220 (6'). I'm 13 years older now and have been a rock solid 165 to 180 for many years since dropping coke, then sugar generally.

Looks like it's around 190 calories per can of coke. Drinking 3 a day wouldn't be absolutely insane (lunch, dinner, mid-afternoon). So that's 570 calories saved a day. At around 3500 calories needed to burn a pound of body fat, you are looking at losing 1 lb every 6-7 days. That's if you are at a equilibrium maintaining weight with your current diet. And this would obviously change over time, but just a rough idea. You could lose 15 lbs in 3 months based off those numbers. Again, I realize as your body changes, your caloric needs change and it's not quite that simple, but it certainly isn't nothing.

Of all the things I cut out of my normal eating routine, quitting soda (even diet soda) had the largest effect.

It's not the calories so much as it is the sugar. In one can, there are 39 grams of sugar. In a bottle, there are 52 grams of sugar. That is A LOT. If you're drinking 3 of those per day, yeesh.
To OP, yes, quitting soda can definitely help you lose some weight.

One can of soda a day is supposedly about 15 pounds of weight over a year.
Beer is estrogen fuel. Germans noted forever ago that the girls that would pick hops would wind up in puberty quicker.

Make sure not to drink fruit juices as well. It’s just as bad as soft drinks in regards to insulin response.

Lot of wasted calories in sweet tea/soft drinks. They're a triple whammy - zero nutrition, high calories, and no satiation.

So what should I drink? I drink a 6-8 dr peppers a day. Use to be 12 so I have cut back. So what are some good options other than water?
Powerade?
I hate tea.
Orange juice?

Have you tried flavored water?
Posted on 1/11/18 at 9:24 am to Walt OReilly
definitely not powerade or fruit juice. too much sugar in both. if you don't like tea you might be in a bind
you drop those DPs and replace them with water and you'd be surprised at the changes both in weight and energy

I quit drinking sodas a while back. I fill that void with the lemon and lime lacroix.
I would probably loose more weight if I cut out the beer, red wine, and bourbon but frick that noise.

I could do that in my 20's. Once I hit 30 I lost that ability though.
It wasn't really a significant amount either. 5-10 pounds usually. I drank 2-4 cans of Dr. Pepper a day back then. I'd stop for a week, and lose about 5 pounds. Stop for 2 weeks and it'd go to 10 pounds. Never went beyond 10 pounds though.

Are we speaking about regular soda? Or sugar free/zero calorie drinks? If you're cutting out the real stuff, I would think you'd drop a good amount of weight. Just think the huge insulin spikes you're causing with all that sugar. Seems like a great way to get diabetes. As far as the zero calorie drinks, I think they're ok in moderation. On the other hand, after listening to podcast with people who are well versed in gut health, seems like these artificial sweeteners mess with your gut flora big time. I started to transition to stevia flavored drinks.
