We're also pretty thin on places to get good fresh sandwich/po'boy/deli fare.

Lafayette:

New American

And honestly, just good restaurants. It's lacking "upscale casual" restaurants. I was obviously spoiled coming from New Orleans, but there is just a lack of good restaurants with interesting menus here. Not many "chef" restaurants. We have a handful of good spots, but I feel like we're continually frequenting the same spots.

Maybe po'boys but not sandwiches/deli.

The Garage
Mr. P's
New York Butcher
Diplomat Deli
Ranelli's
Sam's Deli
Brick & Tin
Bham Breadworks
Mile End Deli
Klingler's Deli

All of those are solid.

Bham is sorely lacking in German food and Korean BBQ.

“Restaurant” Cajun food generally sucks anyway. Even when in a place like Lafayette, I rarely eat Cajun food from restaurants (I have a few trusty places).

It appears to have have finally closed, but even Mountain Home Arkansas had a nice German place..German House.

Lotsa retired Chicago PD & FD stretching their retirement dollars and fishing there. Was surprised at the food in such a small town when fishing at Gastons on the White River many years ago.

BR is 0-fer in German, Kosher Deli, and very weak sauce in Chinese for a city it's size

Kit Wong and his sons make more money selling sushi than native fare..so did Derek Chang, etc..

But if I could get exactly what I wanted, I'd love a place with a large variety of Pilsners, Hefeweizens, and Bocks served in the appropriate glasses, with an interior that looks something like what's pictured below. Yeah, I know it's gimmicky...kind of like a Bavarian version of the Londoner. I'd like that.

Have you checked out the new Deutsches Haus is New Orleans?

Try Sticks BBQ on 59. They also just opened a second location on 22 near the Sonic.

Some of those are okay and Mile End is a great addition. But by that list I'm guessing you are okay with sandwiches made with average or down-market meats and cheeses. Mr. P's (great butcher, cookie cutter below average sandwiches), Diplomat, Ranellis and Sams wouldn't make it a week in New Orleans or New York unless they gave away free food and registered people to vote at the counter.

I share this same sentiment. Grew up in New Orleans, and my wife and I basically rotate Social, Masala, Rock-n-Sake, Charlie G's, La Pagua, and Blue Basil. We go to Nola about every 2-3 months for a date night, and haven't ate at the same place in probably 6-7 years.

As far as the OP's question, I wish there were legit Chinese places in Lafayette. It's so bad that I was briefly ecstatic when there was a rumor that PF Chang's was coming to Ambassador Caffery.

A few other good spots you can try: Bread & Circus, Tula Tacos, Pamplona, Central Pizza, and Spoonbill.

An Arzi's or Albasha would kill it here.
