I prefer a hearty plank like a steak fry myself.
When I feel that way, I go to a convenience store or gas station that cooks tater logs.

Best are the traditional Belgian pomme frite spots. Traditional double fried .
Fast food ones: Shake Shake crinkle cut and Dairy Queen old fashioned burger joint style.

Steak fries for me.
I can't believe the ratio on this. Steak fries are by far the best style around. Of course, you have to deep fry them in beef tallow. Maybe these downvoters put them in the microwave or bake then in the oven? Crispy on the outside. Soft on the inside. At home you need to buy frozen Ore-Ida or something, because you can't just cut a fresh potato and fry it immediately to get that texture.

By far, homemade fries. Cut to your liking. put thin layer of olive oil on them. Then put them in a single layer on a cookie sheet and bake in the oven til you like the way they look. then season to your liking.
Nothing compares. Not even close.

Anything fresh cut and fried to order is always welcome. Frozen fries are a sad substitute. I’m always amazed at places that put so much thought into their mains and then throw frozen Sysco fries on the plate.
And yes for the quick serve places 5 guys is the best, just make sure to tell them you want them extra crispy

Lamb Weston brand frozen fries cooked in the air fryer.
They win a lot of frozen fry reviews by serious cooking magazines, and deservedly so.

Chik-Fil-A has some of the worst fries in fast food
My complaint is they never fill the container. Always looks like someone has taken 5-6 off the top, especially in the drive thru.

When fresh and hot, Checker's is the GOAT.
For store bought, HEB has some garlic and herb fries that I'll throw into the grease when frying fish, and they're pretty good. I personally prefer frying tots, though.
