Or a banh mi.

After moving to Houston and being forced to find an alternative, I'd go so far as to say that Bahn Mi Bread night be better than fresh Leidenheimer. The French had a profound effect on Vietnamese Cuisine and they taught them how to make good bread. I could only imagine the revolt when the first "po-boy shop" started serving a 10-12" loaf over the obscenely huge sandwich the standard po-boy is though.

That Bahn Mi Bread is so awesome everywhere in the U.S. and Leidenheimer can't seem to be replicated anywhere else has made me extremely suspect though.

Anyone who wants a burger or hot dog bun over good French bread has lost their po-boy mind and should be immediately eliminated from this conversation....

You missed my point. What I'm saying is, even though it might not be great, it's still the best BR has to offer.

Im sure I have had better at some point, although off the top of my head I cant name another place because I dont eat a lot of roast beef po-boys. Besides, no restaurant is perfectly consistent. Sometimes it may be better than others.

Left handers...pussyfoot.

I speak of the brotherhood of accurate food nomenclature. If it's fried, it's not a King cake, soft bread, not a poboy.

People on here think you're black?

I've never thought that or even seen someone say that. We have like 3 black posters, and you've never been on the list to my knowledge

I haven't not in BR.

Although when I go there I skip the roast beef and get shrimp.

Best RB poboy I've had was Arabi Foodstore on Friscoville!

I stopped taking your post seriously when you referred to bread having "no character"

That's ridiculous, John Candy had hair.

Carb free living, sadly, my forays into the paradise of bread, good and bad, are always short lived, save me from such a fate. When I do allow some carbs past my defenses, it is really sad when it is that soft, mushy garbage. I usually just eat around it.

John Candy was an accurate description when I got the nickname back in high school, as that's how I was built at the time. I've since lost a lot of weight, but I'm not shaking a nickname I've had for 27 years.

To those of you who haven't made the assumption, not that it matters, but thank you ... there have been quite a few on here who have openly made the assumption that I'm black, obviously based on nothing but my Southern University logos. Like I said, it's resulted in a certain noticeable tone that not only i, but other people have noticed.

I also have a full head of hair. Bald? I'm Sicilian. Fuggetaboutit.

"I can't stand leidenheimer bread or bread similar. It turns into a giant crumb on your shirt as I take a bite. Soft po-boy bread is the tits"

I just had a roast beef poboy using Reising's Poor Boy bread by G.H. Leidenheimer Baking Co and it worked out great. Was nice and soft and did not crumble up on me. But I do know what you are talking about because that drives me nuts. I bought mine at Rouses in Mobile. Half the bread on the shelf was hard and the other half was soft and fresh. I think if it's not fresh don't buy it. That's the only way that kind of bread does not make a bread crumb mess.

But the hard crumbly stuff makes great bread pudding. I make a killer hard sauce.

What is soft poboy bread? What brands?

I love Poupart's in addition to others.

If the place is taking care and rotating their bread correctly, leidenheimer should still be soft. If it is toasted, it becomes easier to tear and is still soft in the middle. Leidenheimer has no preservatives and goes stale in like 2-3 days. Most restaurants get deliveries daily or every other day.

Meh, i don't like bread that cuts the roof of your mouth and turns to powder after 1 bite. I prefer my bread to be crisp on the outside and soft in the middle. Kind of like The Chimes fried rolls.

You New Orleans folk that like your lindenheimer bread can keep it.

Their bread is hot garbage, always turns to mush or falls apart
