The question is: why?

Because some people prefer a touch of sweetness to their grits. Some people prefer salty grits. Some, like me, like a shite load of Crystal in their grits. It’s really funny, and very much telling of the simple minded stupidity of coonasses, that you people find it so appalling.

They like tomatoes in their gumbo.

ice in boiled crawfish water?

They want to slow down the cooking process in order for the crawfish to soak up flavor without over cooking and drying out.

Mom likes sugar on her grits. I told her that's more like cream of wheat than grits.

I like my grits savory, cheesy too. Bacon, jalapeno, and cheese mixed in is good.

Only if I have grits eggs and bacon.
Any other time I want them savory. With bacon and eggs I like a little sweet

Ya'll lose your mind about non-LA folks putting tomatoes in gumbo but you're out here putting sugar in grits

Solid, but hogshead cheese melted down into a bowl of hot grits is even better

They could accomplish the same thing by not overboiling them to begin with

I've heard of sugar in grits, but don't know anyone who does it. I usually put cheese and a heavy amount of black pepper.

Sugar and strawberry preserves in grits is very good if you're wanting something sweet for breakfast. That's how I was introduced to grits as they were never served in my home growing up.

My family's always done this and I assure you there is no Yankee blood in us. We've been in the South since before the Revolution; both sides

Are you black? Most of the people in the pro-sugar camp on this particular discussion were black. I was thinking maybe it's similar to putting sugar in cornbread, which is done more by black folks than white folks.

I had never seen or heard of it before either. However, I was eating breakfast with a black guy one time and he proceeds to start emptying sugar packets in his grits. I didn’t say anything, but must have picked up how perplexed I was, cause he said, “oh, you didn’t know that’s how black people eat grits?”

I am so white Ancestry.com couldn't even fake my results

The hard truth is that Southern white families who don't have the same culinary traditions that Southern blacks have aren't really all that Southern

ETA: Last part is mostly sarcastic. See below comment

So "Southerness" is determined by culinary tradition alone?

GTFO

And take your sugary grits with you.
