Sugar in your grits?

I recently came across a discussion on another forum about whether or not sugar belongs in grits. I personally have never seen this - not in my home, not in someone else's home, or on a menu. But a lot of people were adamant about it. Maybe they were Yankees or something, I'm not sure.
Have y'all ever witnessed this?

Sugar does not belong in grits

I put a spoon of sugar in my grits along with an egg yolk. Call me whatever you want, it's delicious.

Have eaten it both ways. As a kid with butter and sugar. As an adult with salt, pepper, and cheese.
Prefer it both ways. It’s grits. Not some sacred food.

No. Sugar belongs in Cream of Wheat, not grits.

I'm from N.O. and grew up in the Lower 9th Ward. My mom is 100 % Cajun French and I remember as kids she would serve me and my 2 sisters grits with sugar and a bit of milk in it for breakfast. She'd also do this with oatmeal and cream of wheat.
I haven't had that combination since I was a little kid and now prefer my grits with a bit of salt and a generous helping of my habanero hot sauce to give them some pop.

No but I can’t count the number of times I’ve said I wouldn’t put sugar in some dish and hear my granny/mom’s voice in my head saying a little sugar makes it better.
I would give it a try.

Not gonna happen in my grits but I’ve lived in SE Louisiana for well over sixty years and I know people that do. Not gonna tell them not to eat what they like. :)

I ordered some pancakes, sausage and some grits at a café. They put all the items on one plate. I got syrup and the grits mixed.. It was good.

Ewww! Butter and a pinch of salt only.

This thread is really about sweet vs salt preferences.
I grew up with my Cajun grandmother putting sugar in my grits. That's all I've ever known. Now as an adult, I greatly limit my sugar intake,.....but I damn sure don't add salt .....I don't come from a family that puts salt on everything, so that puts me in the minority here. I'm okay with that, and I'm okay with my normal blood pressure without medication.

The question is: why?
Same people who put tomatoes in gumbo?
Ice in boiled crawfish water?
Stop the insanity

I’ve never even heard of putting sugar in grits.
A slice of hog head cheese melted into grits is delicious.
