one side of family is from southwestern arkansas, other half is from lower 9th/St bernard. both put sugar in their grits, particularly with kids growing up.

moved on to cheese grits as an adult, but still give sugar and milk in grits to the youngest.

same with coffee milk.

Yes, I've seen nasty people pouring sugar in their grits.

Not if you put sugar in a bowl with milk and add cornbread.
