Stupid stuff you've done in the kitchen.
I just opened a can of beef broth, and poured the whole thing down the drain.

I'm so used to draining whatever can item I am opening.

Not paying close enough attention, opening the big end of the seasoning container and dumping an enormous mound of seasoning into a dish

Being a complete dumbass and forgetting to grab a potholder to get a hot pan out of the oven

In college before I knew shite about cooking, in an attempt to thicken a jar of spaghetti sauce I dumped baking soda (powder not a slurry) thinking it would thicken. It basically became balls of baking soda.

Put a raw, uncracked egg into the microwave. (I was 12-ish.)

It exploded and blew the microwave door open and got egg everywhere.

Years ago I pulled a Pyrex out of the oven and put it on a burner I didn’t realize was hot because of a lack of counter space. I turned around to wash some dishes and it sounded almost like a gunshot. Damn thing exploded sending shards of glass everywhere. I was lucky that I only had 3-4 scratches on my legs. Could have been a lot worse.

Last week I put something on a dinner plate in the oven for just a few minutes. I’ve used the same plate in the oven before, so I knew it could take some heat. Forgot that the oven was on 450 and the plate broke perfectly in half as I removed it. I somehow managed to angle the food on the rest of the plate so it didn’t fall off.

Cutting my fingers several times.

Putting bread to rise in the oven and then forgetting about it. (With a towel over the bread bowl). Preheating same oven a bit later to slow roast something—-> Halfway cooked bread in a stainless steel bowl and a burned up dishrag.

Previous neighbors were cooking when a hurricane came through. Pot on stove. (Isaac?). Power out for a week. They left to go to a family members house who had power/ac. Power came back on. Pot still on stove. Burned down kitchen/side of their house. Smoke ruined all furniture/carpet/clothes/curtains of rooms that weren’t burned. Firemen had to kick in front door too.

Yep, did this too except in Pyrex glass mixing bowl full of water trying to boil an egg. Thankfully it didn’t decapitate me when it shattered and blew out the microwave door like a frag grenade

ETA cutting vegetables, dropped a knife, lost hunk of toe

I did that many times to de-glaze with broth for a gravy. It worked great until it didn't I heard the same noise. Cleanup was extensive.

This was my wife’s doing. I was upstairs and heard a loud pop. A little later another pop and then a burning smell.

I went downstairs to find the stove on and a pot that had eggs in it to boil. She left to run an errand and forgot to turn off stove.

The eggs exploded and it took forever to get small pieces out of the pot rack and the ceiling.

Grabbing a damn hot skillet or pan. I just finished seasoning a cast iron skillet in the oven about thirty minutes ago. Pulled that joker out and set it on a trivet. Went to wipe some rust off the edge with a towel and grabbed the handle. Woke up everyone in the house.

Opening up a can of corned beef (I hate those damn cans with the key), couldn't get it out of the can. Started shaking the can. Corned beef on the floor. Picked it up within 3 seconds so still good, right??

re: Stupid stuff you've done in the kitchen.
I often use an instant read thermometer to open the oven and check temp on an item, but sometimes I use a wired thermometer during the cook. When using the wired one, a couple of times I had a brain fart and just grabbed the hot probe. I don't think I will do it a third time.

Tip: keep an aloe vera plant around. Slit a piece open and put the gel-side on a burn. It relieves the pain better than anything I've found.

I've spent hours with a piece on my finger and feeling okay, but it would burn like hell as soon as I removed the aloe vera.

Not knowing the wife had already loosened the lid on a jar of spaghetti sauce, I picked it up and started shaking it before dumping it into the pot. The lid flies off and spaghetti sauce flies ALL OVER the kitchen. Looked like a crime scene.

Repeated the exact same scene about 6 months later!!! Needless to say, I never pick up and shake jars anymore without confirming the lid is firmly attached.

Very first day of moving to Lafayette to go to UL. I was living in some type of community living that shared a kitchen with 18 other people. I put in microwavable mac and cheese without water for 3 minutes and smoked out the entire house!

I've done this exact thing. I think it may have even been with beef broth.

On a few occasions I've blindly grabbed spices and put them on buttery toast thinking it was cinnamon. I know I've done it with chili powder, probably others. Made for some super fricked up toast.

re: Stupid stuff you've done in the kitchen.
Stupidest thing I've ever done in the kitchen was well over 40 years ago when I had one of the old style gas stoves with the pilot lights between the 2 sets of burners.

The pilot lights didn't work and I had to light the stove with matches and did so to start cooking and I shook the match and casually tossed it into the kitchen trash can behind me. It didn't take long to realize I had not blown out the match and had set the trash can on fire.

Small fire mind you and easily contained, but that was a dumb move.
