Not in the kitchen, but at a bbq competition one time. We got set up and started up the smoker without checking the center cooking chamber. At the last competition, someone had put a rubber hose in there. We caught it before it melted, but it still left a terrible smell in the chamber for a while. Needless to say, we didn't place in that one.

I've done the exploding pyrex trick and opening a pressure cooker prematurely burning the shite out of myself.

The worst was carelessly setting a nylon duffel bag on the counter and inadvertently bumping the stove burner on. I nearly passed out from smoke inhalation and burn down the house.

I was making a velveeta dip for a party and my wife was making a cake. She cracked her raw eggs directly into my bowl.

Last week I accidentally put cumin in my son's scrambled eggs instead of black pepper. He didn't even notice

One thing that comes to mind is something I did in my extended kitchen, my garage. One Thanksgiving, we were planning to fry a turkey outside with propane gas and a crawfish pot. It was drizzling, so we did it in the garage. As soon as we put the turkey in, the grease spilled over and the flames shot up to the ceiling. I thought we were going to burn the house down. The grease stain is still on the cement. I have been baking my turkeys ever since.

Not a good idea to talk politics at the table

One of the two things I choose to never discuss with folks.

That and religion, because you're not going to change anyone's mind about their beliefs, so it is a lesson in futility to even bring it up.

My wife's family is fairly large and when they get together the conversation will eventually turn to politics, especially in an election year.

They get so flustered with each other that it's a wonder it doesn't come to blows.

wife was busy prepping for a get together and wrote down her peanut butter chocolate chip cookie recipe so I could throw them together to help her out (since it was simple and just a few ingredients)

Followed directions (I thought) and they came out looking and smelling great

Pull them out at party and my wife takes a bite and has a startled look on her face...

I used a tablespoon instead of teaspoon of salt. Oops

Looks like the strain was more than that pressure cooker could bear.

Damn, hope nobody was hurt. That's going to cost a pretty penny to correct-----new range, new hood, ceiling repair, laundering your underwear---------

I once leaned too far over a mixing bowl and got my hair caught in the beaters of a hand mixer. I was standing there with the mixer on top of my head when my mom walked into the kitchen.

My brother played football at LSU. He brought some teammates home for dinner one night when I was making lasagna. I was so busy flirting that I forgot to add the layers of noodles. The pan was already in the oven when my dad asked why there was so much pasta left over. We made "lasagna rollups" that night.

I feel oddly validated that I'm not the only one to have made this mistake.

I will never make that mistake again.

I was a sophomore in college and trying to woo a girl in one of my classes. We talked about how much we loved food (I didnt) and I convinced her to come over, I was a great chef (I wasn't) and how I could cook a mean spaghetti with a homemade family secret marinara (I couldn't).

Got online, found a marinara recipe. Called for 8 cloves of garlic. I thought a clove meant the whole head of garlic at the time. So I spent a whole hour pulverizing 8 heads of garlic to throw into the marinara.

I had a towel on my shoulder when she showed up, for my course of boiled spaghetti and a store bought salad with caesar dressing. Asked her to test the marinara sauce to see what it needed and she had the most visceral reaction I've ever seen.

We ended up getting drive thru Cane's

Making crab legs steamed in a wok is one of the easiest, most foolproof things ever. You toss in a bit of water, place the frozen legs on a wire rack, cover, and steam until warmed. I was young and dumb and didn't know there was a difference between frozen and deep frozen. When I tried steaming the legs from a deep freezer as I usually did, they were still semi frozen in the center, so I put them back into the wok. With the extended cook, the amount of water that usually suffices was depleted and the wok began to emit a nasty burnt seafood smoke. We ran to open every door and window. Yes, the smoke detector went off, yes, the smell was absolutely horrid.

Broke a knife trying to hack off a chunk from a block of frozen crawfish tails. Alcohol was involved.

Tell me what it is, so I can explain it to a young friend.

Age 17.

I looked like I had been peppered with fine shot and was whining.

It happened the other morning, I didn't think ol lady saw it so I didn't even react. Nothing to do about it anyways

I got chastised like a child.

I took a crip class in high school called Bachelor Living, kind of Home Ec for guys. My partner was a guy with spina bifida, who was a real character -- there was continuous trash talking between us. The teacher had us make sugar cookies and was going to judge the results. I think we took trash talking to a new level as we made our cookies. When the teacher took a bite out of one of our cookies, she immediately spit it out. Apparently, we had confused sugar with salt -- both white and granular right?

Yeah, that's a game changer when it comes to cookies tasting good.
