RIP Southern Craft

Saw on my FB feed this morning their brewery is closing for good. That really sucks. Pompous Pelican was one of my favorite beers.

Tough to sell expensive craft beer and make any money when half the state is unemployed and governor has his nuts on your tap room for a year.

Won't be the last one to close
Those places have to be hurting really bad
Plus they have so many now I don't see how they all make it in such a crowded market

Breweries have been hit the hardest with COVID restrictions.
A lot of mediocre breweries that were already struggling prior to restrictions.
Expect more of this.

I thought they shut down last year considering they havent made a social media post since March of last year.
Really hard to gain a following these days if you arent even putting yourself out there and relying on only 3 beers.

I saw the announcement on Instagram this morning, and said the same exact thing. The last post they made prior to the announcement today was back in March simply announcing they had to close the tap room for Covid.

People are worried about the Great Reset and Age of Aquarius and how it relates to society as a whole, but they don't realize it only applies to breweries. Something needed to happen to weed out the less than stellar places and Covid was the catalyst.

I mean, you would think these places would be able to realize even before Covid that they would need more of a hook to be successful (or even sustainable) than simply 'hey, look guys, we're brewing our own beer.'

The market has a way of culling the weak from the herd and with the number of these craft breweries that has sprung up over the last few years some of them closing or merging is inevitable.
However this mess we have been forced into will expedite the downfall of some but it will also cripple a lot those that might be on more stable and sound ground financially or otherwise.
And this is by no means limited to the craft brewery industry-this reaches across all industries. 2021 is going to be a bloodbath for some and a boon for others. Better hold onto your wig.

Southern Craft did a good job of supporting the community. Gave product away for church fairs and fund raisers. Good people. Hate to see it.

They were well behind most breweries in the state. Just didn’t see a reason to buy their beer over anyone else’s

Craft opened in 2015, before Parish distribution was good, before Jucifer came out and way before it went into distro, before Great Raft had significant distro in BR, before Holy Roller came out, and before Tin Roof revitalized and started putting out Voodoo. In 2015 brewing local beer was enough, but in the couple years after that it quickly stopped being enough bc of all of those changes. And SC never adapted

Wish them the best and I hope all the local companies thrive. But there are craft beer companies on every corner now and there weren’t many years ago. It’s not a good business unless you can have high sales and currently, the market is too crowded. Trends don’t always equate to a good sustainable business, unfortunately.

Southern Craft didn't close because of overcrowding of the market. It closed because it got hamstrung by the big distributors, and because they weren't selling the beer people wanted to buy, on top of all the COVID restrictions. Rally Cap came out after SC and is doing pretty good right now, and the market is even more crowded now locally, than it was then. IF you brew good beer that people want, people will buy it. However, the entire industry would be doing better if our politicians wouldn't purposefully and selectively punish industries based on nonsensical restrictions.

Every business can complain about too many restrictions. That’s the challenge of business.
