Harsh stuff.

I’d drink the IPAs at their tap room, because fresh IPA is nearly the same product everywhere.

They were also pretty decent people.

So who’s next to fall? Istrouma? LA 31? Rally Cap? Tin Roof (lol)

Is Pelican Craft Distribution still a thing?

I cannot believe they lasted as long as they did:
bad beer
bad location
zero ambiance
insane covid restrictions

They made the worst beer across the board of any microbrewery I have ever tried.

Hard to do that under Louisiana’s absurd Alcohol regulatory regime.

I'm going to have to disagree with you here.

Southern Craft's IPAs were awful. That's not the same everywhere.

Of those, Istrouma just because they are new, and I've heard mostly mediocre reviews on their beer... supposedly it's a great atmostphere though, so they have that going for them.

Bayou Teche isn't going anywhere, neither is Tin Roof. Rally Cap has been getting great reviews, if they can hang on to the end of COVID BS, they'll be good.

I've been a few times and the beer is very average. I was there Saturday and could hardly find a place to park it was so packed. They seem to have a different target audience and seem to be thriving. The space itself is definitely awesome.

So, they've figured out a "hook" it seems.

not really
yea idk why he said it is hard, you just get the Microbrewer permit alongside the AG permit. And give up your Brewers permit.

And until the 3 tier system is done away with we wont ever have the brewery presence other states do where someone can literally brew in a 800sf storage unit and distribute themselves.

This is what I've heard.

ETA: This is probably a really good strategy for the area... not that brewing great beer isn't also a good strategy.

Agree, hopefully they'll improve the beer.

I don’t know how the Oak Street brewery is staying afloat. They opened at the worst time in New Orleans. They brew traditional stuff not the sexy marketable beer. I wish them luck but I’m not sure how they survive.

I mean, you would think these places would be able to realize even before Covid that they would need more of a hook to be successful (or even sustainable) than simply 'hey, look guys, we're brewing our own beer.'

Breweries are really no different than restaurants. Restaurants are started by a chef who is good at cooking. Breweries are started by a brewer or two who are good at brewing.

Neither the chef or the brewer is generally a good businessman.

If you put out a decent, consistent product, you can generally eke out a living. But the moment something out of your control turns south (pandemic, recession, increased competition), that lack of a margin/buffer really hits hard.

Yeah I haven’t been, but a lot of my non-beer-drinking friends love it. I don’t know if they’ve even had the beer.

Or a Tin Roof that's started by a couple of businessmen and hired a brewer. Of course that first brewer hire was part of the problem for a long time and their inability to consistently keep someone in the position has not helped things.
