Peter Luger Takes it on the chin

There is the hiss of butter and melted tallow as they slide down the hot platter, past the sliced porterhouse or rib steak and their charred bones, to make a pool at one end. The server will spoon some of this sizzling fat over the meat he has just plated, generally with some line like “Here are your vitamins.”
NY Times Review
Other restaurants, and not just steakhouses, age that beef to make flavor grow and intensify and double back on itself; dry-aging at Luger still results in a tender steak, but it rarely achieves a hypnotic or compelling or even very interesting one.
But those other restaurants are not Peter Luger, as Friedrich Nietzsche might have said.
“When in this essay I declare war upon Wagner,” Nietzsche wrote in “The Case of Wagner,” “the last thing I want to do is start a celebration for any other musicians. Other musicians don’t count compared to Wagner.”
I don’t think he’s really breaking new ground here. People know about where Peter Luger really stands in the hierarchy of NYC restaurants, but ouch to read that.

It's not just Peter Luger. I've never really understood the appeal of steakhouses. To each their own, I just would much rather spend my money eating elsewhere.

i will be honest, i went to PL about 5-6 years ago and found nothing special about it. the steak was decent, but the bacon was great.
all in all, not worth the money and hype imo

Last time I was in NYC my work group tried to book a reservation for a party of 8 for a Saturday evening dinner, three weeks in advance; only come to find out they were booked solid for 6 months. Moreover, PL only accepts cash, which seemed a little odd, but hell, whatever works for them. We instead opted for Gallagher’s and had a phenomenal meal.

So what is the best steak house in NYC?

Keen's is hard to beat. Bowery Meat Co, Sparks and Porter House B&G are also favs of mine. Luger doesn't make it into the top 8 or so.

Yup too many talented chef's putting out great food for a plain old steak. There are tons of things I cannot cook with ingredients that aren't readily available I would rather go eat than a simple steak.

Don’t know. Don’t eat steak in New York City.
Well I did twice. My father had a Peter Luger credit card as he is from there. Or was from there and took his whole family to dinner I don’t know circa 1974, all nine of us. When he died I inherited his credit card so I just changed the billing address to my home, left the card in his name and once several years ago took my wife there just in his honor. We enjoyed it if for no other reason than it reminded us of him and him in his youth dining there. The credit card is from the mid or late 50’s.

I have eaten there twice both times the food was very good. Is it the best food in America no but the steak is good.

I recently went to NYC. Had reservations at Peter Luger’s and ended up canceling. Chose Wolfgang’s Steakhouse in the financial district instead. Steak came out just like Peter Luger’s. It was very good.
But if I am being honest with myself, I can get just as good, if not better, steak at Ruth’s, Mr. John’s and even Del Frisco’s. And they’re all much closer to me.

4 Charles.
Peter Lugers needs an overhaul but they are too stubborn to catch up to the times.

Put me down as a luger naysayer. It’s ok, nothing special, and certainly not worth the schlep to Brooklyn.

Same.
It’s not hard to buy a good raw steak. It’s not hard to cook a steak. It doesn’t take particularly long, either. If I’m going to have steak, I would rather just cook it at home.

My friend would always give me the “I can’t believe you’ve never been to Peter Lugers before”. One night, we both had dropped our kids off at a sleepover and we’re going to grab a late dinner with our wives. My friend mentions that his friend works at Peter Lugers and could get us a table. frick it, let’s go. We splurge a little for a fancy SUV to take us out to Brooklyn. We get there, grab a drink, and are quickly brought to our table through a packed house on a Saturday night. A bunch of food comes out, we eat, we drink, we have a good time. It was a memorable evening for sure.
The food was mediocre.

This article is pure click bait
How does a restaurant with all the awards that PL has, get such a shitty review?

What awards have they gotten?
Zagat most recommended?
People love us on Yelp?
Michelin stars?
Every city has a few places that have been around forever, tourists flock to, and they serve crap food with shite service. Lugers just part of that scam in NYC.
