Is anyone here well-versed in Indian cuisine? I’ve literally never had Indian food and am curious about trying it! What are some recommendations/favorites that you have?

I don't know enough about what's considered authentic and what's not but I'm all about the Americanized versions that I eat when I'm able.

Tikka Masala
Tandoori chicken
Butter Chicken
Naan
Palak Paneer
Jeera Aloo

Go to Hammond, eat at the lunch buffet at Punjabi Dhaba, and write down the names of the dishes you enjoyed.

Spicy doesn't necessarily mean hot. They use a lot of spice in Indian foods. With some of the dishes, and at some of the restaurants, they will ask you what heat level you want the dish prepared at.

And as another poster has recommended, start by finding a good Indian buffet so that you can try several dishes and learn what you like.

My personal favorites are tikka masala (technically not traditional indian but a british version), korma, butter chicken, biryani. Also a big fan of naans, especially paneer/cheese naan.

I like the suggestion to hit a buffet and sample a lot of different things to see what you like. Sometimes the quality is a little worse on a buffet, but should give you a good idea.

I'm actually making a chicken tikka masala this weekend.

I cannot get past the smell either from the food or the people. Bad experience in the past I just cannot overcome.

Try tandori chicken, make it as spicy as you want and cook it on A ceramic grill like a BGE. Sever with a good couscous recipe and cold cucumber relish. Nann bread is good too.

There is a lot of regional variation in Indian food.

Tandoori Chicken is always a good place to start

I personally like South Indian Dosas.

Bayleaf on Sherwood has a great variety of dishes for you to try. Hope you enjoy it!

For whatever reason, Indian food is the one ethnic food I just don't care for. I just think it's the unusual blend of spices I don't fully appreciate. Used to have a friend from India, and she got me to try nearly every Indian dish, but it didn't work, even though I love Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Greek, etc

I'm not quite sure how to respond to that.

Sleep Dirt is very underrated.

Nice to meet you.

Start with Tandoori Chicken, Dal Mahkani, and Naan bread then branch out from there.

Lots of Indian places have brunch buffets. It’s a good way to sample a bunch of different items. A lot depends on the quality of the restaurant. Some are much better than others.

I remember the first time I tried Saag Paneer. It’s not a dish that looks all that appetizing. But a friend and I were at a brunch buffet at this place on campus and everything tasted particularly great so we figured grandma must be working in the kitchen that day. So I tried it. It was excellent.
