Had never heard of this place but some friends wanted to go there last night. Was pretty skeptical seeing that there was not a single person there but man i was wrong. Located by the old cortana mall by the bowling ally. Ordered the cancun which consisted of 1 spinach and crawfish enchilada, a shrimp enchilada with a crawfish taco. Amazing. One of the better Mexican dishes i've had. Margaritas were potent and delicious as well. I know this place has been around for a while but if you have never been there i highly recommend it.

His son owns/operates Mestizos on Acadian. Both are really good. They integrate local fare(crawfish, crab, etc.) into Tex-Mex cuisine brilliantly.

And his brother owns and operates El Rio Grande just down Airline across from Franks. Carlos was there for years, closed and retired for years then reopened about a year ago I guess. Not a bad place but it never has much of a crowd.

It was in business for 30+ years, then they retired. They have only been open again for a year, maybe less. I think a lot of people are unaware it has reopened, because it did very well before they retired.

It's where Jim at Mestizo learned to cook, so yeah, good food.

ETA: Martini in first!

actually, there is a coupon on half off deals, $200 for $35 with a restaurant.com card. Carlos is included in there. Carlos's is my favorite mexican food in Baton Rouge

They have been on restaurant.com also and I was skeptical. I am going to go ahead with it and try it now because the step son and I love messican food and my hubs works in mid-city so this is on his way home.

Same here about the margaritas. I am old friends with Jim and during my stay in BR after Katrina we met a bunch of friends at Mestizo's, the original location, and drank profusely. When I woke up the next morning my buddy said "thanks for driving home" I looked at him and said "I thought you dorve home". Neither of us remember leaving.

I refuse to patronize Mr Carlos because his wife is a fricking lying bitch.

Carlos's is very very good. Never had a problem with the food. I've been there over 20 times and it has never disappointed. Usually not a big crowd though...

Weird.

My mom JUST asked me 10 minutes ago if I had heard of this place because she got a gift card that she'll never be able to use all the money for. I told her I had no idea and it's probably nasty.

Then I log on here and see this thread. Good to know!!

I had a run in with her once. She's a flat out liar. We did a repair for her, wasn't perfect but considering what we had to work with. She returned it in worse shape than it left out of my shop.

It's amazing how they stayed open forever and never really did.

El Rio Grande is the same thing.

Both were always solid places, with some negatives -- but I always thought those provided character.

We used to eat there all the time when I was younger and my family had a business in that area. Funny, my grandparents refused to ever go again after they said the wife tried to rip them off on a bill

This is the truth! My husband goes there at least weekly for lunch, and they start his entree when they see him pull into the parking lot. He went in one day a couple of weeks ago and said every table was full. He got nervous that people had "discovered" it after 40 years.

I went in there with a party of 12 at lunch once. The person who was supposed to call ahead and warn them did not, assuming they would have plenty of free tables. The waitress bitched at us the whole time for coming in with such a large party. I think they must like their volume the way it is.

My father in law took clients for years and had an account but found out they were padding it by about 20% over a period of years I guess thinking since they drank they would never pay attention. He quit one day and never went back.

I was always a Rio Grande fan since I went to school with his daughters. They don't need much traffic because they've been there forever and live behind it.

I do like Mestizo's though and think Jim does a great job.

I must say I have been to all 3. I wasn't real impressed with Rio Grande. Mom and I went in one evening and we were the only table lol. Food was decent. We used to always go to the old Mestizos on Sherwood by Applebees. That was a solid place to eat. Carlos's is dam good though. Love the bean dip.
